dumb question about studio gear...

hey guys,
was just wondering, if any studio gear was not used or turned on for a loooong time, would there be something wrong because of it? My roomate left his car to me and told me to turn it on everyday or once in a while... suddenly I was just thinking if monitors, mixers etc would be like that also...

Nah, pretty different, a car is something mechanical, needs to stay oiled and moving.
An electronics circuit ages more by using it then not using it.

That's true, except for potentiometers. They're mechanical. They can become noisy from disuse. If there are certain pots that don't get adjusted too often it might be a good idea to "exercise" them by giving them a full turn each way once in a while. Helps keep oxidation from building up.

It might depend on the material used for the components. I remember from my days as a TV tech that some capacitors were made with paper. Turning on the equipment periodically allowed the heat (normally the enemy) to help dry out the parts to keep them from building up moisture which could lead to problems. Newer equipment may not have this problem. Of course, you might want to fire everything up now and then just to know its status in case you need to get it fixed or adjusted before you really need to use it.
