Among what you've mentioned I'd go for SPL, what I'm missing is: do you need a preamp or a strip channel?

It's not on the list, but an RNP...unless you just don't like them. The SPL pre is nice too. If you're in the UK you could get a DAV BG-1 for $700-ish.

DAV [ex decca pre]

Agree!without a doubt the best pre amp for that kind of dosh..Perhaps a few quid more but a great pre at any price. You might be interested in the Sebatron stuff.Good deals for what looks like proper gear..

I've contacted the guys for DAV and it's 1000 euro, I'm in Greece. Otherwise it would be my first choice.

I need a pre amp, not a strip channel. Purely for vocal mic recording.

Thanx for the suggestion. Very nice gear BUT, I think Sebatron is a bit higher than my budget, plus no dealer in Europe.

Yep, that's the one. It's the ugly duckling of my preamp collection, but I love it.

Cool 1000 euros!!

Thats a real shame!!Costly! Its getting tough everywhere but yeah thats works out quite a bit more than the UK prices.I do not know but Chameleon labs have pres that are budget but with a good rep.Sort of new-ish gear,i think.Neve-ish in style,so ive heard but put together in China with good design and bits!!?
The only other idea would be if you are DIY inclined.A firm called seventh circle sell the rack/chassis and different type pres.I am interested in trying this at some point in future myself but perhaps not a great route if you need that one good pre soon...
Hope you find something that suites.Good luck!

What are the prices going up? Ivo is selling 4 chnl DAV for 990e here. And I got my BG1 here for 620e (inc shipping).

You mentioned you wanted it for vox. TC Helicon discontinued the Voice Pryzm plus. and it kills. It's designed for vocals. It also has voice modeling and gives total control of vox. I have seen them on E-bay for around $400.00

This may seem like a stupid question but it's an honest one: in this category, is there no love for the EHX 12AY7 tube mic pre? I love that pre on vox.

Aw dude........that was so stupid! Just kidding, I had one and absolutely loved it. You are spot on. I really liked it with vox and acoustic guitar. Definitely some love for it from this direction! I also have a DAV BG1U and love it.

Thanx for the input! it's excellent, but I would prefer to have a clear pre amp, no valves.

Wicked piece of machinery. Do you think I could trust buying it used?

ART's Voice Channel is pretty nice bang for the $$$. Swap the tube with your favorite flavor and it warms up nicely.

I totally agree. The GB30 preamp blew me away. WAAAAAAY better than the Mackie, Allen Heath, JoeMeek, IsaOne, Presonus, drawmer mx60 ... I was stunned by how bad-ass this cheap little preamp sounds.

I bought a notepad 102 (first run of 102) as a live preamp with aux send and return with headphone and input for cue'ing and I was blown away. Previously I picke up a focusrite IsaOne (crap. went back) mg102c (crap, went back). Joemeek vc3q (cool ... but doesn't have a headphone) ....

Anyway, I have an rnc on the insert and I'm using these KILLER fx pedals made by Digitech: hardwire series reverb, chorus and delay. KILLER for live! The Reverb even has some lexicon licensed algos.

Best $300 bucks I"ve spent in a long time. thumbsup

Cheap pro preamp: daking mic pre one dude.

i have the UA 710, got it for about 700, i've used it across multiple genres and on anything from vocals (mainly) to the occasional acoustic guitar. Preforms great. The ability to blend the solid state and tube really gives you the ability to "dial in your tone"

Here's one no-one ever mentions.. ADK AP-1 . I have two of them and bought them both used for under 500 ea. Use them on almost everything, never dis-appoint. One has stock ADK op-amp, the other I put in an API 2520. They get used a lot around here.

The Daking MP1 does well for me and the Presonus Eureka has a great rep outside this forum.
