| warning: potentially dumb convertor question! So, currently I'm rockin' the MOTU 828 mkI (c.2000AD). I feel the need to upgrade. Here's my potentially dumb and annoying question: I'd like to hook-up a Mackie 802 mixer to a Lavry AD-10... then use something like the DA-10 to run back to the Mackie... Is is just ridiculous to use a cheap-o (but highly regarded & versatile tool in its price range) with Lavry convertors? My goal is to forgo the all-in-one soundcard route (ie; ensemble, duet) and invest in convertors that, as far as I'm concerned, will suit my needs indefinitely and I can work on the mixer situation later. Mostly synth hardware will be plugged in to the mackie... mostly. Thanks for reading. Jonathan |

| its not dumb however three points to note a chain is only as strong as its weakest link a good converter will mean you capture a truer sound, good or bad converter technology is more likely to increase and get cheaper in the future than mixer technology is narco

| ah, yes, excellent points indeed. I have certainly been over-looking the obvious "weakest link" scenario. But I gotta start somewhere - I just wanna be smart about it. In essence I'd be getting an accurate, detailed representation.... of a Mackie mixer! The other interesting point you make, and gives me some skepticism, is the future of convertors. You wrote the technology will increase and get cheaper, but "increase" does not equal "better" or "superior". It'll be interesting to see what happens nevertheless. Most of my interest in Lavry convertors is from reading his interview in TapeOp from a couple months ago. Very informative, and I admire the engineers who aren't trying to directly compete with the status quo of recording technology. So he's gotten me to look at other alternatives besides Apogee and the like. |

| Its not a crazy idea. Mackies get bashed a lot but they are usable boards that sound OK. I have made some records on mackie consoles that I really love. I have made consoles on SSL's that I really love.

| ...Right on man!! I'm not trying to hate on Mackies, but I did have to point out the irony of my potential setup... it'll probably work better than what Im doing now anyway. Appreciate the encouragement. |
