Pro Tools

I have been recording on a 2' analog since the 70's. In 1990 I got the Mackie HDR then Radar. I work a lot on outside Protools projects which are easy to import/export to Protools I like the "stand alone" Mackie/Radar as they are wired to my analog board. I have no experience at all with Protools but would like to get it if for no other reason just to play with it. It seems that I can't seem to get just the software alone. I don't want the hardware as I don't need it. The hard drives from my HDR's slide out of the machines and into a 4 bay FW enclosure which is part of my computer. Anyone know how I can get just the software?

You can't run Protools without the hardware. You could do what I do. Just buy a Delta 2496 card $60 which is M-Audio(Protools company) and M-Powered Protools which will give you a Stereo 24 bit card and Protools 7.4, just import your radar tracks and your laughing.

So PT is not just software? You HAVE to use their hardware? Years ago I had PT-free, but it was only 8 tr. with no PT hardware. So a Delta card is around $60.00, and the M-audio has the SW? If I get a used one is there a lock? and is it transferable? I have used Tracktion and the license only allows 2 machines. I had it on my MAC and PC. When I switched a hard drive on the MAC, I had a hard time with the lock because the replacment HD appeared like a 3rd machine.

Protools comes with the iLok, the 2496 card can be used with any software you like.

ok, to run pro tools, you need digidesign "approved" or whatever hardware plugged in at the same time.
Digidesign and M-Audio both make pro tools compatible hardware, the M-Audio version of pro tools is called Pro Tool M-Powered.

M-Audio sells a 2 output USB card that is basically a dongle that will let you run pro tools m-powered, it's tiny.
But I think any M-Audio hardware will work with that version of pt.

Simple as that.

You can't have or run PT (sw) without one of the hw digi or m-audio (which allow you to run PT m-powered), so yes you HAVE to have a sound card, and the software comes free with it (or better lets say is included in the price) M-box or cheap m-audio cards are your choice, or you can get the mirco mbox wich is a USB pen drive that allows you to run PT i don't think it has any connections, but I also think is more expansive than the m-audio card

Thanks guys. Now I understand more of why some people are unhappy with PT. Does Digi still support their older versions?
