| Gear maniac | heat damage
right my now home studio is up in an attic with not alot of a/c. its gets really hot in the summer. my basic gear consist of an 003rack, yamaha hs80s, a mac, some pres and compressors, a couple at4050s and some other decent mics, along with a bunch of amps, etc. it is possible that i can install a window air unit, but i can not have it running all the time, only when im in the studio, and i cant exaclty have the air unit outside so im not sure how well that will work. how serious is the heat threat to gear? does it affect all gear or only certain things, for instance i can move the mics downstairs in the air but cant really move the computer and speakers and 003. what are some things i can do to help this problem?

There's a reason why studios are often well air conditioned and climate controlled and it's not just for the comfort of its users Quote:

Well, the short answer is 'yes, heat is bad for electronics', so if you can't do anything else, at least get the window unit installed and start it well in advance of turning on your gear as I imagine the attic would be like an oven at that point. A thing that might help alleviate things (in conjunction with the A/C) is if you can also MOVE the air with strategically placed fans at the various cooling points of the gear. You may have to shut them off between takes, but hey...you are in an inhospitable environment, so something has to give. The Mac and the rack I think are the most vulnerable in your set-up. Also, definitely keep the mics out of there when not in use. Good luck with it, and I hope you and your gear find a more comfortable space soon ![]() Best, Claus
