I just started looking for for distortion stomp boxes for vocal use as well. And what I have
gathered from most is that an overdrive or light distortion is the most intelligble but who wants that any way.

Two that I am looking into are Boss ds-1 and Ibanez ts-808 also the akai g-drive,

good luck.

what kind of music are you doing?
are you going for the evil coked up pitbull sound or just an overdriven effect on a regular vocal?

actual distortion pedals tend to cause a ton of feedback.
an 8 voice chorus will give you a distorted effect without feeding back, as will a vocoder with white noise.

i've seen bands use rat pedal, boss se50, Boss VF-1, digitech vocal racks.
i prefer overdrive when going for a lil texture live. bullhorns are good for that as well & provide a nice visual.

I would suggest looking at bass distortion pedals as they often have the option of blending the clean tone with the distortion. Fewer options for sure but flexible.

Brad Gilderman mixed a track of mine a few years back and he used a TS to give some smooth overdrive on my vox.

Personally i'd use a Sansamp Classic or maybe a Tri-AC - something with more amp-like qualities.,and more comprehensive EQ, and wider gain range.
Zoom did a nice range of overdrive and dist pedals which you can still find here ad there.

WHat about a small solid state practice amp like Peavey (The Strokes used one) or Tech 21?

Also - how bout the Line 6 distortion modeller?

Pedals for vox dist

Agree that a small amp would be a good way to seek those sounds..But as far as pedals go i have used lots of different makes. You could try the boss overdrives,MXR distortion.I even bought a couple of dare i say it??Beringer guitar pedals £15 ..,the distortion/overdrive one sounds great!! as it was intended but also sent drums through it with success. It has a 'tone' knob which is useful and that would help you shape the color of 'nasty' etc..

How about using some dynamic like a 57 and just boosting the gain on your preamp or are you looking for a way to get this effect live?

The vocals on Hank III's Straight to Hell have this nice inherent overdriven sound that you might like. Curious myself to know how they achieved it.

For old-school industrial nastiness I always used a crappy hi-z radio shack mic straight into a Boss DS-1... NASTY.

For pedals, the Jersey Girl Fulltender is one of the coolest distortions I've ever used and works well on many sounds. The top end is smooth and not buzzy or fizzy like most.
Guitar amps can work well.
Lots of rack gear breaks up nicely be it preamps or even comps.
