Thread Starter | Best Tom mics on the low end I'm thinking Audix D2's fit the bill (a pair can be had for less than $200 if you look around). Any other ideas? BTW, 421's would be nice, but they're a little too much...thumbsup

Thread Starter | I've got several 57's, but really like the improved isolation with hypercardioid mics... |

| Seriously, on the cheap the CAD TSM411 is a great tom mic. Good on guitar cabs too! That mic is a real performer and has a solid feel to it as well. War

| D2 Audix D2 is a sweet mic for toms...you could go I5 for real budget (I prefer its ballsier, hotter tone palette to the 57's mid heavy slightly crispy vibe)....but the D2 should knock your a$$ out. Tear it up, Peace

| I have taken 57's over 414's on toms. They work great most of the time. |

| I'm surprised no on'es mentioned the mk-012 yet which is clearly a fantastic mic on toms. Very smooth low end on toms, especially after the Joly premium electronics mod. |

On the cheap, I kinda dig 57's for toms, but maybe cause I'm soooo used to hearing them there.. ![]()

| I use D2's and D4's on rack/floor toms respectively. Hyper-cardioid seems to help for me.

| Depending on how inexpensive you want to go, Blue's kickball sounds pretty decent on Toms and can be had for around $50 a pop. |

| I have the D2 and D4, but they are my last choice for toms, actually. I think they are just OK... But I'm a big fan of the 414 on toms. For low end, I would look at the Oktava 012, it seems to be universally loved for tom recording. I've only used them for that once but they were awesome. My top choices for cheap dynamics on toms are Beyer M300C on rack toms, D112 or Beta 52 on floor. Occasionally the D2 or D4 is better but it is rare for me... Oh yeah, I know this makes me wacky, but I've just never liked a 57 on toms. Shoot me. |

| I've been thinking about this for a few minutes, and I have to admit, I have used the D4 on floor tom as much as any other mic. It's the D2 that I've never been that impressed with... |

| e604 above and below the hi tom and mid tom. e604 below the low tom and akg d112 above low tom. Remember to phase reverse. You can't really fail to get a sweet sound with this set-up. |

| I love the 504/604/904 design (supposed to sound like an original 421...it doesn't really, but its' great in its own way!) plus you don't have the broken 421 clips to fight. D2s and D4s are easy to get great tone as well IMO. Very under-rated! '57s are always easy to work with since we all know what they sound like...get you plenty of attack, but you have to position really well if you want the warmth you can get with other mics just throwing up. |

![]() Some other outstanding tom mics are Kel Audio HM-1s... I just love the way they render toms... full, round, and smooth, with nice detail in lower mids. And their smaller size makes 'em much easier to keep outa the way of errant drumsticks. | |

| MXL 2001 for floor tom is incredible. You can pick these up for under $50 on ebay. Captures the attack and the low resonance beautifully. Goose bump time.

| This is one of the few places that I prefer the Audix i5 over an sm57... Don't have any experience with the d2... Audix i5 on snare and toms for me...

| If you're looking at the D2's I would suggest those, although I have no experience using them. However I have the audix fusion 4 package and am really digging their sound and the D series is always getting good reviews so I don't think you could go wrong with the D2s |
