All depends on where the cymbals are. Most drummers I record have their cymbals pretty low. With metalheads and huge cymbal racks extended to the ceiling, yeah, hyper will bleed. |

audiotechnica at23s are pretty good (wishing i'd bought a pair on ebay i saw for $100) ... then again, i've had good results with sm57s - mostly a source thing to me |

CAD M179's work well for the money. They have the hyper-cardioid option.

| I used to use sm57 for toms on the cheap and always got fair results. I am interested in how the i5 stacks up. Also the Sennheiser e609 supercardioid might sound decent.

I've used the D2 on toms before with pretty pleasing results, definitely worth checking out. Anyone tried a sm57 with the transformer-removal mod on toms?? I'm interested in trying this. |

I have tried the i5 and the SM57 on toms. I think the i5 has less bleed with close miking, so I would personally lean towards that. I'm actually thinking of picking up 3 i5's for my tom duties. Same price as the SM57, and I'm usually happy with the i5 on my snare... -ScottyD |
