| I just bought one for my secretary who is aspiring to do VO work, but as I recollect, it has 75db of gain which should be more than adequate for ribbons and demanding dynamic mics like the SM7. That's more gain than a lot of dedicated preamps out there where 62-72db is pretty common.

| Depends on the microphones noise floor.....but the Apogee Duet works really well at about 40-60 DB with the AEA R84 on acoustic GTR and Vocal.. The Fat head may have more gain...i dunno. The Duet microphone preamp is worth the price tag of the entire device; That's my impression of its character.

| Lives for gear | Also it depends on what you are recording. If you are getting right up to the grill on a guitar amp, it won't need nearly as much gain as a distant recording of chamber music. If you are doing a lot of quiet sources you might need a more ribbon-friendly preamp. I don't own the Duet though but this is just a general observation.

| Voice Over work. She has an AE5400 we gave her a couple years ago that she can use with it, or I'll just lend her an SM7 or RE20 and she can go to town with it.

| well im doing guitar amps, drums, and strings ,,,think those sources are loud enough to not go over say 40-50 db of gain ,,i read/hear tons of good things about the duet so i think it will be worth it,but its always a trick with ribbons,,,anyone else using ribbons with these for the instruments listed above?? --my band has no vocals so not interested in voice..thanks. |
