Question ProFire 2626 VS. Mackie 400F

I've finally put aside enough money to purchase a decent interface and wanted to get some feedback from all of you slutz out there. Both the 400F and 2626 have enough ins/outs for me, my main concerns are: A. sound quality--in particular the converters and mic pres. B. drivers.

i'm a bit of an audiophile w/ a project budget and although i would love to get my hands on an FF800, i can't quite swing it right now.

anyone have experience w/ both the Octane and Onyx pres??

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated! I'm within a week of making the purchase and $700 is a lot of money to me. I want to make sure that I'm making the right purchase.

peace ,
christopher

This would be a conundrum for me personally because I prefer the Onyx preamps but the converters in the M-Audio are probably better - I don't have experience with the Profire in specific but own another interface from the same generation (NAMM 2008, Fast Track Ultra) and have to say that the converters alone are great when I use them with external preamps whereas I always felt the preamps in my Onyx outshone the convertors (before I sold it).

The Profire is a more flexible, future-proof interface - 4 more pres, 26 channels total, and Pro Tools compatibility (if you swing that way). So that's where I'm throwing my vote.

Yeah, I'm an M-Powered user, so I've purchased a 2626 - just waiting for some other gear to show up before testing it out. You could always buy the 2626 and then string up an 800F behind it! :)

400f is great - pres and conversion are top notch. I'd put the 400f up against pretty much any FW interface in that range. I have never had a problem with the drivers, and I know the new drivers have solved pretty much all the problems I used to hear about. Of course YMMV.

Yeah Mackie uses AKM converters which are the same as RME and a few other well respected units... The only bummer about the 400f is the complete lack of expandability, but if you don't forsee ever needing anything more than what the 400f offers, I would go with that. My 1200f is a monster! I love it!
