First record I engineered and produced

Just got the masters back from Tennessee. That's where the budget went, mixing and mastering.

Some full-length songs here. Did all the recording with a Digi 001, Chinese mics but good guitars, amps and drums.

Opinions sought. Thanks! FWIW, I'm the guitar player.

Tasty

..."warm", "smoke filled club", "vintage"...all terms that came to mind while I was listening. Well done...I like the overall mix. As drummer, I tend to pick apart the drum sound...and you nailed this one. Nice overall kit sound...snare tone is particularly good. Cymbals are prominent without being too crispy...which keeps the recording more "warm".

Bravo...what are you doing for your encore?

Man, I'm having a CD release party and playing some gigs. I will admit to having some really fine help with the mixing and mastering, all of which was done in Tennessee (I'm in California). Eventually, when we have more songs put together, we'll do another one but that's gonna be a while.

Interesting you mention the drums, I use the "Glyn Johns" 4-mic method. Mics were a 57 for close snare, a Beta 52 for the kick (first time I EVER got a good kick sound), an MXL603s for the side "overhead" and an ADK A-51 for the true overhead.

I was going for a "not too slick" sound so it looks like I managed to do that. And not a Studer in sight.

An MXL 2003 or V67G for the male vox, the female vox were recorded elsewhere on a 4033 on a Mix system. Guitar was a 57. Fiddles were a 4033 into an 002 Rack, Piano was a grand. Don't know the mics.

That would explain it...I am a huge fan of this recording method (it is the only one I use)...the room / ambient mics pick up the "true sound" of a live kit thumbsup they make up the bulk of the soundscape...I just dont feel that close micing sounds like a live drum kit. Cheers...

One thing I learned from the guy who recorded the female backing vox tracks - if you have a drummer who can do it, have him re-record the kick and snare separately, after the initial recording. I didn't do this, as by the time I had asked his wife to sing on our record, the drum tracks were done.

But in the future, if I'm working with the same drummer, I'll do that. But the drummer has to be about perfect to pull it off.

Sounds Great! I'll be the 1st to say that I dig the piano sound captured

Especially considering the low(er) type budget-gear used to track!
