any love for the krk rp4 or rp6?

... with the prices dropping through the floor, I wondered if anyone has picked up the rp series from KRK... I'm reading good things, and since the rp6 are 300 a pair vs. the Event ALP5's 329 per pair (the set I planned on getting based on recommendations from sales at sweetwater), I'm thinking of going with the rp6's for my first real monitors (currently using nice headphones and referencing various systems).

Any thoughts? I'm thinking for the money these practically are a no-brainer, but tell me if there's any reliability/better bang for buck options I haven't looked into.

I have a home project studio with good songs, but meager gear. I hate buying twice, but I also know how to make "good enough" stuff work.

Thanks in advance for any/all input.

Captain KRKs

...plenty of love from me. I bought the RP5s...they were my first project studio purchase. I quickly wanted more bass (wish I had bought the 8s)...but I added the 10" sub. I am now living happily ever after...for now, until my next bout of Slut gear envy kicks in...I think they sound great (but I don't have much to compare them to other than the audiophile KEF, Martin Logan, Klipsch, etc speakers that I have had throughout the years...so I have a pretty critical ear). For the money...I don't think you can beat them. I know they may not be "reference quality"...but man, $300 for a pair sure frees up a lot of money for mics, pres, cables, software, keys, etc. when you are first getting started.

I would get some 8 inch subs if you are doing anything bass intensive, like techno, or dance music, but if you are doing acoustic or rock and roll maybe 6's would be enough.

There is no such thing as an RP4.

I have the rp5's and love them. You do need to watch out for the bass though, mix it a little lower than you'd like to make it sound right.

badhorsie, I'm right with you. I called Sweetwater and they bragged the Event ALP5 on this basis: Event makes high end monitors and so you can get a trickle down effect in their lower end technology. The parts may be manufactured outside the U.S. but the engineering you're getting is going to be a high quality.

As Kit said though, I have heard that the bass is somewhat heavy and colored in the KRK. If bass is your thing (i.e. disco, hip/hop, etc) it might be a good match. I have heard though that KRK colors the sound somewhat so that when you go into a place like guitar center and compare them with other low end monitors, they stand out more, and more people buy them. (Disclaimer: I have not ever heard the KRK nor the ALP5, this is all just stuff I have heard from other peoples opinions on gearslutz, etc).

I'm in the market for new monitors too, so I would love to hear what others think about the ALP5 vs. the KRK RP6's. Which is gong to be a more flat monitor, and more transparent from one player to the next?

After auditioning moniters extensively recently, I found the entire line of KRK's new monitors(from RP on up) had the cheapest fake high end Iv'e heard next to a boom box. On a budget I'd spend an extra $50.00 and go for the Yamaha HSM 5's which sounded real and flat. They lacked a bit more low end than the RP5's, but that low end on the KRK's is colored anyway . If you can get used to the current KRK's, fine, but I personally wouldn't want to. A year ago when monitor shopping, I changed my mind and went all out for room treatment instead, then saved for the Dynaudio BM5A's. Although it's hard to do, some times patience is rewarding.

I've heard both and ordered KRK RP6 two days ago. they should arrive tomorrow. ALP5 sound good but have (in my opinion) this NS10 touch that I really dislike. By saying that I mean that they emphasise medium to high mid frequencies a lot. I haven't heard them for a long time but enough to know that they won't be comfortable in long mixing sessions....(home sessions...but hey they can last for a while). They also are bass shy. RP6, while not being great monitors seem to be more suitable for the job. they do sound too sweet and probably won't let you hear all the details in a mix...but at least, in that price range, you won't suffer. I think they are a good compromise. I wish I was able to afford event SP6...these ones knocked me down for the price. anyway...still can't wait 'til tomorrow...they will be my first "real" monitors :)
last word about NS10s and the like......I don't get it.....how come they became so popular? if you are to make something sound good on a shitty speaker (a philosophy I can understand), why not just use your laptop speakers?

Ok sorry I actually got the answer to my last question....if you make a flat mix on NS10s, it wil turn out to be a "smily face mix" on any other speaker. Works for me, I take it back :)
but I hate that way of thinking...you should be able to rely a tiny bit on what you hear.

Maybe there's a reason the price is falling through the floor?

If they are blowing them out you probably won't be able to return them if your dislike them.

The new "G2" series has begun shipping and people are likely dumping the old original RP / Rokit series. The G2 are being sold at essentially the same prices as the version 1 so not a bad deal really.

I used to own RP6, they were my first monitors in fact. As someone already mentioned they're very colored & don't translate well at all.

So might as well save yourself the trouble & save up for a better pair. The only problem is the quest for better monitors never ends!

I've been through KRK RP6 --> Dynaudio BM5A --> Dynaudio BM6A --> K+H 0300 & now i'm saving up for Barefoots.

You do eventually learn how your monitors translate & compensate for their deficiencies. That's the advantage of buying good monitors from the beginning as it saves you a lot of time, you nail the mix right away instead of having to go back and forth.

I had to work for few weeks with a pair of RP6, I definitely wouldn't consider those monitors professional, they can be fun for tracking tho'
