What he said...

The problem lies in this new american ideaology, the one that is bringing this country to its Knees and I wont get into that too much but needless to say its a right here right now mentality. How much does that ideaology relate to this subject...well... The "I would rather have 4 preamps outsourced from China hoping they will work from someone who isnt an established business (someone trying to make a quick buck) pay up front for them and wait 6-9 months and hope they work" versus the "I will save up for the product I really want from someone who is established and I can get on the phone who makes the product with their own 2 hands ands backs it with pride and integrity."

People who have little will have even less... even Jesus made it a point to say that in all of his divine words.

Save a penny lose a dollar!

This is SO true! I understand that good stuff is expensive, especially good american stuff. Its the same thing with stealing music and intellectual property. All these musicians want the big record deal but when you go look at their Cds they are all stolen or ripped.
I live 15 miles from API. I have lusted after API stuff since I was 18 and I am 37 now. I was in studios with my Dad when I was a kid in Northern Virginia and remember seeing API consoles. Yes, it's expensive but I think you get what you pay for with most of the audio gear out there.
I'm not quite sure how I came to this thread, but if you had spent $2K for an API pre and it had problems within its warranty period they would fix it no questions asked. I just had my 10 year old 7600 in for repair and it cost me $180 for a bad op amp. Things go bad. Things deteriorate. Caps dry up etc... Anyway, buy real gear. Dont get pissed off when you spend $200 for a copy of a $2000 Gibson guitar and it wont intonate. Get what I mean? I only buy products from China if its the only option and even then only if I cannot go without. There's a million reasons. Save your money, buy good stuff. Support real craftsmen and inventors and artists. Dont support the factory owner in China who pays 5 cents a day to 11 year old kids working with toxic chemicals and no safety gear etc... I've been to China and yes, it is that bad. No such thing as OSHA there.
Seriously??? I cant believe enough of you here on Gearslutz are naive enough to get into a group buy of Neve stuff for How much? Was it $275 or something? Didn't the too good to be true lights and bells go off? Wait, what about when you combine Neve with China? Nothing? I'll stick with my good old American API and Altec and Kendrick Tube stuff. My old DBX and my British Focusrite.
You also rocking the cracked plugs on your PC based Protools???
I dont know but I think maybe you get what you pay for or deserve. How does that Child Labor Civil Right Preamp sound anyway????

My Chi-Neve ACMP-84's sound pretty darn good.... I didn't even pay close to $275.00 for them and those kids did a great job on the 7 we bought.

For a first post, that's pretty lame.

FYI, it was $175, and I use them almost every day. Absolutely killer sound, and I have no problems with them. About 50-60% of the time I choose them over my API's. But back to the US of A thing.... Should I support American businesses that buy cheap Chinese OEM products, put their name on it and mark it up 600%?? Is that being a good american? If so, we'd have too cut about 70% of the gear we see advertised here and toss it. In this global economy, I'd be willing to bet that even API has Chinese made components in them. It's almost impossible for any manufacturer to make a product without SOME Chinese parts / labor / components.

While I agree with a lot your are saying, there is so much misinformation in your post that it's kind of ludicrous....

PS - no kraked plugs here.

hey, bill, how many ACMP's do you have total?

i admit, i fall fallen in love with them! i now have a pair of each and, while i have had to do mods to each of them to get them sounding great, think that they are still fantastic. and this isn't a "for their price" scenario. i love the 84's the most, but would not hesitate to use any of them at any given time. granted, they don't get top billing due to my 7602's, but being second banana to those isn't necessarily an insult either.

I originally had 2 of each, but bought another 2 73's for a friend, but ended up keeping them. So, eight of them. All work fine. One has a little weird thing going on in the EQ, but I rarely use the EQ anyway, so all is good. thumbsupthumbsup

I just stumbled on this thread, thinking if I need one or more of these pres. I saw the earlier post and it distracted me. So, is there something un-american about using a PC too?

BTW are these pres even available anywhere?

You can find them used from time to time. Thought I saw some for sale on the classified section here not long ago. Do a search there and you'll find something. Of the 3 models, I would steer clear of the 81 version as it seems to have had the most issues of the bunch.

Hey, Chris. I have a pair of mint 73's in boxes that I've been thinking about putting on ebay. If you (or, anyone else) is interested, PM me an offer...

Go over here and read through what mods guys are doing.

[ACMP investiupgradifications] All things PREAMP

There is like 50 pages or so at this point so you might want to jump in the middle somewhere and start seeing where people start swapping parts etc.

A yearly (only half-joking) checkback seems to suggest that a fix may actually be in the works while we are still all of this earth! Do mine eyes deceive me?

Help w TNC ACMP 1073

Just bought one on ebay. DI works great, sounds great. Mic input sounds as if there is sonme dc leakage. Totally unusable. Does anyone know of a company or repairmen that can perform a "total mod" upgrade
(ie: full modification with both the mic input and line output (Carnhill, formerly St. Ives) transformers (two total), Neve value tantalum capacitors and the Motorola 2N 3055 output transistor used in the 1073)

I checked with Zen Audio and they won't do it ;-(

Thanks for the help

You'll need to find one used. They pop up occasionally. I'm keeping all of mine though.....

there probably too busy changing out transformers in the golden age mic pre amps when they should probably be looking at the rc network on those things first off. last i saw the group buy head muckety mucks were taking in faulty units for repair testing. that was back in march. i dont think theve fixed or sent any units back to the lucky ones.maybe contact them when the fixes are figured out.

They seem to be staying more current on these over there. I do believe that the two test units that went in for a fix were returned but they still had some issues, though some things were improved.

I still use my 84's on just about every session. Still the best bargain out there considering what they are for the money. If you have the 81's, you may not feel that way. I believe those were the most problematic of the bunch as I recall.

So, no more group buys like this? My 81's are running fine 'till today.
The instrument input didn't work... but who cares? If it was the EQs only, it was worth that price already!
