Yes. Good point. That's also true and probably the biggest reason a small manufacturer would go with an external PSU. There may be ways around this however... I'm not sure...

From the looks of it the 73,81 and 84 all have a IEC connection leading me to believe there's an internal PSU.

I think that's only true if the use an already approved wallwart type PSU. All the Neve type clones, like the Chameleon Labs, I've seen have a custom PSU with a larger transformer- not a generic one. So they would still need the same certifications for that.
(that said, the early answers made sense)

and *possibly*(?) a pic of the INSIDES of the 81 here, as well as some more technical discussions:

btw: from what I understand the pres should all be $25 off now based on current #'s!
(update: and that discount is now reflected in the pricing)

Anyone know how true these preamp designs are to the actual Neve's they're cloned after? Besides swapping out the transformers, what other mods do you think will be necessary to get it closer to an actual Neve? Or is this something we won't know until the first pre is delievered?

jb, from my reading of the situation, no-one - apart from Chance's tech that is - really has any specific info regarding these pres. Chance has said that they are modelled on the original Neve design. He has also said that he and some other engineers had a brief audition and that they were impressed. That's about all we know at the mo.

This pre group buy is a leap of faith........ and I've lept.

I've leaped myself and ordered an 84 and 81. Was thinking about going for two of each, but it's probably best to stick with one of each this time around.

Have any of you tech guys taken a look at the ACMP-81 photo on the groupdiy? Any noticeable differences from just looking at the photo?

Taking a look at the way its laid out from the picture, its built pretty modularly. Im willing to bet all 3 have the same power supply (yes, it is internal) and the same preamp boards. Looks like modding it is probably going to be fairly easy. The Transformers might even be a direct 1-1 replacement with Carnhill's part.

Any idea of postage?

I live in Australia and well, sometimes the postage to here is ridiculous..

Any idea of an approximate postage cost per preamp?

Thanks

Man that is so true. For the life of me, I can't understand why people participitate from outside the USA. Isn't there comparable products available locally? I have sent many mics to Austrailia, the UK, Canada, Mexico, and the ship charges, Even with my NAMM/Fed EX discount are outrageous.

Because most of the time even with "outrageous" charges, we're saving money.

I'm not it the US but I'll have mine sent to the US. I'll find out how to bring'em home later...

We are trying to find a way around all this. I am working to find a way to have products "drop shipped" to other countries to avoid double shipping. I already have some that have shown interest in doing this in the UK and Austrailia. The manufacturer only requires the funds be submitted thru one source. Shipping to other countries would all have to be calculated up front and be submitted for the total group buy. I would welcome any suggestions on this subject.

Well, I'll avoid double shipping as much as I can.
I'll probably send mine to a friends house in CA, then wait 'till someone comes to Brazil to bring me my puppies!

You have friends in Ca? Why not forfit all shipping costs and just have your friend drive over and pick them up? Many have done and will be doing that

Chance, from your experience, what do you think the shipping cost to Canada will be?

It all depends on size and weight

Thats still hard to answer because I have no idea how large their packaging is for each piece of gear. I might add, that the invoices for shipping (to you) will not be requested until after they are made, and have arrived here in the states. (around 3 months)

So what exactly needs to be done to make this "drop shipping" a reality? It seems that this would save the rest of us quite a bit on shipping.

I don't think it's an option, 1st 'cause he doesn't have a car... 2nd... there is no second
Thanks a lot Chance, let's see how everything goes until shipping time, I'll figure it out when it's time!

+1

Let's see if we can make this a reality: does anyone know how to enable this?

I'm sure some retailers would know this method - happened on a few of my int'l orders.

Well,, for one thing one person would have to be responsible for everyones order. This would also mean the duty, broker fees, dock fees etc. The problem (now that I think about it) is that I have already included these charges (to the USA)in the posted price of the gear! A system would have to be in place before a GB takes off. There will be more GBs. Lots of new mics and Compressors. We just had no time to include them this time

fuuck to Fed-ex - just use regular US postal service international.
I have ordered 1 x pre amp and 5 x mics.
I want mine sent by US Post.
I had an Efx unit sent over to Australia from the US a month ago - cost me US$60 - arrived in about 1 week.
Fed-ex quoted over US$350 - stuff that.
Please please please send my stuff regular US Post.
