Thread Starter | SM58 on snare and guitar?
Anyone use SM58 on snares or guitar cabs! I've heard SM57's are more suitable for these applications. I don't have an SM57 but I have a few 58's and have been using them and they sound fine! Do 57's sound much better?

studiojunkie, SM57's and SM58's are essentially the same mic. The only significant difference being the 58's ball grill. They sound very close, with the 57 a hair brighter and more open, and the 58 a hair darker and smoother. imo however, they are pretty much interchangable. SM58's are great, especially on snare and guitar amps. |

IMHO, the 58 does not reject as well as the 57 though. Which is why I never liked it on snare... its picking up too much of the rest of the kit.

I wouldn't hesitate to use a 58 for those applications if you have nothing else. I've often just unscrewed the ball end of the 58, so that it sounds very, very close to a 57.

I sometimes prefer the 58 on guitars... as I think it sounds more open and prettier.... if I'm looking for tight and focused, then I choose the 57... but sometimes for chimey rythm parts the 58 is just what the dr. ordered...

ive always gotten a nice sound on the snare from a sm 58 and is my go to snare mic all the time its a tad bit bright for me but its nice... works well too on guitar amps i usually postion it off axis and have a darker sounding mic on axis one thing about the sm 58 is that is frequency range starts at 50Hz and and the sm 57 starts at 40Hz but there pretty similar.

58 serves well as a hammer too.

58 has a smoother frequency response curve and I think that translates to a more open sound. I prefer 57 on snare because it's easier to fit in (the 58's big scrote gets in the way!) but 58 tight on the cab grill |
