Hi!
Here is recording made entirely on SM57. My friend tracked it himself, I mixed it ITB. Its 57 straight into plastic macbook (noise is from multitracking and lack of proper preamp, but it doesnt bother any of us). There is some glitch at the begining, it happened when I was dumping it on Studer. There is also some distortion when percussion goes in but it is not final, actually mix took me around 15 minutes. Lo-fi is lo-fi is lo-fi
He agreed to post it here, but I need to include his myspace so here it goes :
Coldair on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Videos
Enjoy! more on his site !

Very nice hipster feel to it! Sort of Neutral Milkish.
Nice air and space in the mix. Good job!

Gear:
Tascam 388, not in the best shape
tubefire for pres and A/D
AT3033 on the vocal
Bass direct into the tubefire
One mic on the drums, a cheapo AT
57s on guitar and lapsteel
cheapo condenser on acoustic.

No compression except an RNC on the 388 buss. Zoom reverb on the vocal.
Gear aside friend... This is testament to the theory that a great song is all that counts...

Though the recording is good too...

Local rapper from my area..

Mic used on the vocals was a GLS 57.. yeap the $30 chinese sm57 clone.
Running into an ART TPS II with a NOS 12ax7 , and then into an m-audio delta 44. Mixed in Adobe Audition 3.0. I used block fish and just a touch of delay on certain tracks.

Probably the third or fourth recording I have done(my own band). Tracked and mixed inside of a "tin can" storage shed in the middle of December. All mic pre's were from a Tascam US-1641. Logic8 with stock plugins. Couple 57's, D6, crappy overheads. Trion 6000, and an i5.

Song title, "This Is Copenhagen"
www.myspace.com/beardthelion

Couple other things with similar gear (couple upgrades) on newer studios site
www.myspace.com/aaronchiazza

For sure had its issues, but I did enjoy the almost piercing high end gain to vocals and cymbals.

The Cranks

The Cranks are a Santa Cruz, CA based 2-piece band (guitar and drums)

This was recorded at their practice space and in my kitchen (studio build is in process) on a Digi 002 using a Grace M101 and DBX 386 as well as the 002's pres (shudder to think!)

Mics: SM7, SM57, Cascade Fathead and 2 akg c1000s on the drums. Drum were recorded with just those two mics and a 58 on the kick.

You can download or stream MP3s here:

Honey Child

This is a mix i did last year with an AKG C1000s, MXL 67v, and a 990 into a Tascam 1804 firewire interface. Nuendo 3 with free plugins.

Guitar and Vocal were done live with the c1000 and the 990. The Cello was done with the 67v

Our debut self-titled album "keep you honest" was recorded very cheaply. For vocals, a MXL v67i was used into a Line 6 UX2 pre. We had access to a UA pre/comp, and a Chandler pre, but ending up just sticking with what seemed to work best. We also used the v67i over more expensive mics like the M-Audio Sputnik.

It's not that the aforementioned gear didn't sound good, it's just that we felt most comfortable with the results we were getting with the existing setup.

Of course, the master was done in a nice mastering house full of analog gear . . .

There's a little paper clip symbol. where all the font and tag lines are listed above the box where you type your replys. I missed it a couple times too.

You click on it and it pulls up an attachment window. Then you can upload from your computer.thumbsup

Here’s my bands stuff. Not all “junk” gear but still fairly low end

http://nightofsevens.bandcamp.com/album/anaesthetised

The gear pretty much low end here's a list of everything used

Focusrite saffire 26 soundcard going into a laptop running cubase sx3, which is nothing special. We are looking to upgrade both the computer and software.

Mics used were, SM 57's. An old cheap shure dynamic A10, AKG D112, AKG C214's (matched pair). 2 AKG C1000's (Borrowed these for room mics, I don't really like them but it’s all we could get our hands on). We also have a Senheiser e509.

Drums Gretsch Catalina Club Mod, Used I metal snare drum as I found that the wooden snare I got with the kit does not cut through the mix enough.

Cymbals are various budget sabian cymbals apart from the AAX dark crash which is a little better.

Bass guitar 1973 Rickenbacker 4000. Amp used was a small 100w Ashdown and a Behringer ultra DI100 DI box.

Guitars used. Fender Telecaster and Gibson SG. Amp used for guitars Fender Deluxe Hotrod. Both guitar players use these amps except one has a White Ltd edition. We didn't use the Ltd edition as it has developed a bit of a rattle and needs looking at.

Monitors used Alesis MI Active MK2 which was kindly donated to us by a friend.

Low Low Budget Studio

Hey we have a very very basic setup:

Computer
Lexicon Omega
Beringer Condenser Mic
Sonar 6 Producer Edition
Guitar Rig 3

Check out our recordings and let me know what you think. I think they are surprisingly professional sounding. Listen to "Fall Out" at www.myspace.com/lindseyleemusic

We recorded all of the songs on the myspace in our bedroom studio except "Sweet Revenge".

first thing i ever recorded. i could hardly even play guitar. won't say it's a good recording but it's listenable - and it certainly qualifies as low-end!!!

recorded with a computer mic i got from office depot. mixed on audacity with altec lansing cubes. a friend did the drums on reason.

Heres another one with that I used the GLS ES-57 on.. remember its a $30 dollar sm57 clone, running into an art tps II with a sylvania 12at7 in it.
tracked and mixed in adobe audition 3.0. With some Blockfish thrown in for good measure. No delay no reverb.

and that is ME singing the hook/chorus. lol Not bad for a 40 year old white dude huh?

Shirley, you must be kidding!

On another note, instead of posting myspace (the empty void of buggy stuff) links, use the paperclip in the "post window" (next to the smiley face) to attach an mp3, pleeeease?

It make it so much faster to get t listen to this stuff.

Great stuff BTW.

I won't use pitch correcting software. I use "coaching" maybe you've heard of it. It keeps working even when you don't have it on.

Anyhow, other gear was, IIRC, a Rode NT1, Mackie board, an ART Dual Levelar limiter/compressor, SM57 on the guitar cab, and I think the drums are either free soundfonts or from my old Alesis D5 drum module (gotta pull that thing out one of these days, it wasn't long on sample layers but it had some pretty usable sounds... some great trash drums).

The Goodness of the xp-80

the good prize.mp3

here's one I recorded a long assed time ago... all the sounds (including the kind of wack drum sounds) are from my old lowly xp-80.. the vocals are done on a Rhode Nt-1.. DAW is Cubase SE (stripped down student version of cubase) home made computer (pentium 4 w/ 1 gig rap) mixed on either cheap walkman headphones or M-Audio MX5 (can't remember if I got monitors yet...

Don't Hurt Yourself Laughing

Here's one my son and I are working on. I'm still learning and constructive criticism is always welcome. I'm just an old broken down drummer and wanna be Guitar Player/Song Writer/Engineer/Producer. My son really has the talent and did the Guitar and Bass tracks. He's 16 and has only been playing for 3 yrs. You'll hear a flub here and there that we have to go back and punch if I can't edit it, but it's a fun tune nevertheless.
Our instrumental tribute version of Extreme's "Cupid's Dead"

We're not finished tracking and there's plenty of editing due, but the noises aren't too bad. When we're done I'll post it again and hopefully it will be noticably better.

Cheers!
Mitchell

Drums (Gretsch Renown Maple & Paiste) mic'd with:
e602II(Kik), I5(Sn), SM57(SdSn), e604(HiToms), D112(LowToms), AT3031(Hat) & ATM450(OHDs).
Guitar (Gibson Lesser Paul thru my Egnater Renegade, Tourmaster 2x12/H&K 4x12 three qtr stack) mic'd with:
AT4050 (Omni & back from 2x12 22" & slightly off center)
MD421 II & C1000S (on top speaks of H&K 4x12)
Sort of a bastardized M/S sort of deal I've been playing with and like
Bass (Ibanez Soundgear thru Ampeg BA115HP): Line out.

Mackie boards for sub-mix into an Alesis Multimix16 Firewire (10 tracks at the moment)

Thinkingmachine - Lies - SoundCloud

All the Thinkingmachine songs at Soundcloud is recorded with the MXL and Art combination with execption of the song If you were me. That song was recorded with much more expensive mic and preamp, and I think one could here the difference between the low end stuff and the high end recording.

The inexpensive stuff today sounds great, comparing with how it was 10-20 years ago... yak.

Those songs sound amazing...no really....amazing!!!.....and I am fully willing to admit that I love the Depeche Mode sound.....which you have absolutely, completely,....nailed!

Hope you make it famous.

BTW, IMHO lead singer sounds like a cross between Bowie and Dave Gahan.

Awesome.
