Audio Technica Mics

Which of the audio technica mics would you get for a male baritone vocalist? I am using the 3035 right now and it is too dark for his tone. (very similiar to the singer from HIM ville vallo) I have to eq the hell out of it so that it sits in the mix. I was looking at 4045 or 4047. Any suggestions as i cannot rent these anywhere?

I would go with the 4033, I have had excellent results with this mic on lower register singers. I have also used the 3035, 4050, and 4047. I think they are all really cool mics.

I probalby wouldn't get the 4033a or 4040 for a baritone voice. I have the 4033a and it doesn't do too well on tenor trombone (baritone voice). But it does great on Tuba and Bass Trombone. If you're a Bass, yeah, go for it. For baritone probably not. I'm actually looking to get a 4050 or 4060 as my next AT mic. Although for my current uses that probably isn't gonna happen for a while. Baring some sort of craigslist offer I cannot refuse. Not that the 4033a is bad, it's just a little weak in the EQ range of tenor voices (tenor trombone). Plenty of detail though. Some of that might be my interfaces and not the mic, or not. AT4033a -> DMP3 -> Delta 44 || AT4033a -> Mobile Pre

The 4033 is quite bright, the 4050 is flatter (and multipattern), and the 4047 has a bit of grit to it (it's modeled after the Neumann FET 47).

I have a 4033 and a 4033a and they're actually quite different... they work well on very different things. I would agree that the 4033 is excellent on a low voice, and I would also agree that the 4033a isn't that great for a low voice...

Just curious, how far from the mic is the vocalist, and are you using the HPF? 3060 is another option, it's quite a bit brighter than the 3035.

Audio Technica also has some nice handheld condensers that might work for you. The AE5400 is a good one, and I've been surprised by how good the ATM710 can sound. Of course, you wouldn't need to have the singer hold it, but these will give you a few other options to consider.

I believe the only difference between the 4033a and 4033cl is the shockmount. Any other differences may be perceived or have to do with factory differences. That being said, I have the 4033a and I have used it with great success on a few lower range singers so I know that it can work well for this application.

Vocalist is about 6 inches away from the mic right up against the pop filter. Yeah the hi pass is on.

Try having him back up to about 12", it might just do the trick. I usually have vocalists between 8-12" with the 3035, it does start to exhibit proximity effect inside of 8", gets tubby.

I have also had nothing but success with the ATM710. Also, performs well in a live setting, provided there is attention paid to preventing feedback.
