If you're on a mac the Apogee duet is amazing. Only 2 channels though.

ad/da or just adc? how many channels??

you can find great used deals on stuff like mytek a/d's or
even some benchmark used dacs, etc. black lion has a new a/d which is supposed to be good (im still looking for user reviews of it though!)

lots can be found around that price, good luck! thumbsup

I need DAC & ADC.

I really only need 2 channels.
Need firewire or usb.

I'm on a PC.

I don't really need a pre, but if they are decent it wouldn't hurt.

I'm still pretty impressed by this art believe it or not.
I have the rental for another month so I'll get a chance to spend more time with the pres.
The only bummer is there is no digital in/out, but it does have WC.

Apogee makes many products, so it is hard to compair at the "brand" level.

The last I looked into it Benchmark only made a DAC and it took digital input so you'd still need some hardware to connect to your PC to the benchmark.

Yeah.. I'm looking for something for my writing room. So I need firewire or usb. If I got the mytek I'd need to get something that had firewire/usb -> spidf/aes

2 questions:

1 - Dollars or pounds?

2 - why do you *need* to be able to do 96k? because you need to exchange files with others working at 96k, or because you've been told it's more professional etc etc?

If the latter - well, a decent converter at 48 or 44.1 will be better than a Behringer or similar cheapie converter doing 96.

You're going to have to be VERY lucky to find a Benchmark DAC for under 500 - dollars or pounds! - to leave you another 500 for the AD!

In this sort of price range, I'd say your only option is 2nd hand. you MIGHT be able to find Apogee Mini-Me (mic pre and AD) and Mini-DAC pair for under £1k...not dollars though!

Get a RME ADI 2, 2 channels of A/D and D/A conversion. They're pretty decent. Not the best, but they'll do.

+1
Get better AD and at normal speed sampling rate,
There will be a MUCH bigger difference
I vote for better ADC/DAC at 44.1k-48k
