I've ordered one of the new 828mk3's and am really excited, but because of it's mic pre situation (or lack there of) I was considering getting an 8pre just to be able to plug in more than 2 mics at once. I'm considering the 8pre because it's motu, but something on their site has confused me. tutt It says that you can control the trim level using CueMix on the 828, and when you plug in another Motu device it shows up in CueMix. So if I plug in an 8pre will I be able to adjust the trim on all it's mic pre's right in the box? That would be extremely helpful for setting levels and doing live recordings. Anyone know? |

Well, it all depends on how you hook it up. If you hook up the 8 pre via lightpipe, then it's going to be part of the 828's Cuemix. That has some advantages... namely that you can hear the 8 pre's mic pres along with whatever is plugged into the 828 inputs thru the 828's outputs, via cuemix. If you hook up the 8 pre via firewire, it's going to show up in cuemix on a separate tab. The problem with that is that you can't send inputs coming in via the 8 pre to 828 outputs with zero latency. You can do it via the computer, but then it has buffer dependant latency. That can be fine, if you set your buffer lower. And hooking up the 8 pre via firewire has the advantage that you can use all it's I/O and you are not using up the 828's lightpipe ports. I think it's kind of situational. Or maybe MOTU figured out a way to have have two FW boxes share one cuemix, but I doubt it because that would require routing thru the computer which sort of defeats the purpose of zero latenecy monitoring.

I guess that makes sense, but would I be able to record from inputs on both devices if I had them daisy-chained via firewire?

Yes, you can record from any input of FW daisy-chained MOTU interfaces. Doing it regularly, using the analog, AES, and ADAT inputs of 896 and Traveler all at the same time. All use the same ASIO driver.
