SMPro Audio Mic Thing, worth it?

I am wondering if the Mic Thing is really worth it, for help to isolate the mic while recording vocals. It seems like the ideal solution for me. I do not want to put up a lot of treatment as I do not plan on staying in my current apartment once the lease is up (6 months). I also do not want the hassle of loosing a big chunk of my security deposit. Also, this is just a hobby for me. I do not need everything perfect.

I just need something to hold me over until after I move.

I don't have one but I have looked at these before and I bet they work pretty well, especially for your need.

What works far better than any type of gobo is using a Figure-8 pattern and aiming the null at the closest other instrument(s), or the funkiest or noisiest part of the room. The Figure 8 pattern has a much larger and usable null than cardioid, creating more separation with less frequency response weirdness. And the reason you never hear about this is simply that most folks have never tried it, possibly never even owned a figure-8 mic.

And to answer your next question, pick up a used Rode NT2000 or NT2-A, you can find them under $300 sometimes, or an AT4050 for a little more.

I have one.. tested it against se reflectionfilter. what is obvious is, that the micthing improves the reverberation of a signal, but it sounds boxy afterwards.

you can test it easily. go to a store with a micthing. then speak/yell/rap into it and hear what is comming back.. mud.. a lot of mud.

the se reflection worked a bit better, but still, I like the small one for less hihat-bleed into the topsnare-mic (in the years before any filter they used a plastic-bottle..that works too, but doesnt look as nice ).

all in all, both work ok, for projectstudios.

Thanks for the info! Seems like a mix bag on whether its worth but any half-assed measure seems that way

I might just hold off until I can do some proper treatment, its not like I am going to be recording anything vital any time soon.
