Simple, inexpensive software for beats for 13 y.o. neighbor

My 13 year old neighbor likes to rap with his friend. I showed him Garageband and he asked if there was a similar and good inexpensive program for the PC that he could buy...something easy to use.

He would like something that has beats, but he can also hook up his microphone and rap or sing over his beats.

Any suggestions? My guy from Sweetwater suggested Steinberg Sequel, which is $99...maybe there's shareware?

Check this out

REAPER | About

I don't use the looping features on it but in every other way I've used this thing it has been great. Non-commercial license is $50 and should be perfect for your 13 yo neighbor.

Good luck. Check out the forum over there too.

its a little pedestrian, but frutty loops has a really shallow (initial) learning curve, and it seems to be the entry level weapon of choice for the rappers i've met. eventually some of them move on to more complex software, some dig even deeper and really get some cool sounds out of it.

I will +1 FL studio if you want to write at all

Sony acid is also an option though I think they're all kinda lame.

Check out Cakewalk's Project 5. Really easy loop-oriented interface (a lot like Reason, only easier, IMO -- plus it records audio), good-sounding soft-synths and drum machines, vst support, a cool sequencing window which syncs to the tempo of the song in progress, so you can build a midi track in real time and by ear (good if your kids don't know much theory). It's one of the few reasons I keep a PC around in the studio anymore -- just a handy song-writing tool.

And for the record, I played with the Sequel demo and didn't like it.

ah, so they're no longer playing the free card? either way, i found the program to be absolutely dreadful for midi work.

They never did. Its still unexpiring, and uncrippled without any useless dongles
