I built one too and think its great for the money. I just used some wood strips for rack rails. I left mine the natural wood color and I think it looks pretty sharp.

funny that this should be bumped today. i just tried to order a couple of those little tables and the shipping for two was going to be as much as the tables themselves. i could definitly build them myself for less than that.

Ikea rocks. After searching for months for a large enough table Ikea was the ticket. I had to shave the legs down about 6 inches but other than that it works great for $150.

is this the one you're talking about?
IKEA | Around the bed | Bedside tables | EINA | Bedside table

I bought 2 of those years ago, then once I started recording I realized my rack gear fit in perfectly if I screw my stuff into the wood. Don't use them for rack gear anymore but they're perfect size.

Yup i saw this online two months ago and bought the rast one month ago. Buying the rack and getting a job again gave me an excuse to finally start building a proper home studio. I'm buying everything as cheap as possible so far krk rp5's-$150, Firestudio 26x26-$390, Behringer patchbay-$15, digitech s100-$55, Furman pl-8 power conditioner(not pictured but on its way)-$18, ikea rast-$15 and rackrails-$8. So so far ive spent $651. I recessed the rails a little bit because I'm hoping to make a lid for the front so i can move it around in case i need to record elsewhere. My plan is to have two of these so i can put them on a desk and rest my monitors on them once my sister moves out and i get my bigger room.

Im thinking a compressor and a rackmount delay or an art tps or something to fill the rest of it up.

Cant wait for my Best Buy to start selling audio gear so i can use my discount.

None. Prefered actually as there is MUCH less chance of ground loops. Most star ground system's I've spec'd out have hardwood rack rails.

the only downside is if you use a soft wood like pine. Use hardrock maple and it will be stronger than the steel rails!!!! It's a pain to pre-drill the holes, but definately worth it when you start tracking down ground issues.

True. Leaving space is a good thing 3/16" between units helps with airflow and again, helps out with ground loops. Make yourself a couple 3/16" spacers and use them to template out the holes. MUCH prefered to metal rack rails IMO.

Just to chime in with my own recent build. :D

Edit: Golden Age Units are solid as a rock. No movement whatsoever, as is the ProFire. I've got a Steinberg MR816x coming next week, so will fit that. The reason behind mounting at the bottom was mainly down to the weight pulling on the front screws, which really only stops it moving forward/backward. The weight of the unit is supported completely this way, and for transport, is much safer in the long run. Total cost = £8.03 and petrol to Ikea (few quid) and a couple of hours graft. Screw you GATOR!

Also pictured are DIY monitor stands.

I got two Ikea Rasta´s, + Rack rails.
put them togather the normal way.
Flipped one around and put on top of the other and fastened togather.
6u at top.. in the middle perfect space for the computer and 6u at the bottom.
Can´t beat it for the prize. just brilliant..

am I the first person with problems fitting 19" stuff into the Rast?
it just does not fit. I need 16mm more space, or else it would not fit at all! :(

maybe the newer ones have different sizes?

I should have checked this before painting :x

I have two made out of one table, 4U high each.
Currently in primer in the shed, waiting for it to dry.

And my stuff fits perfectly. Pessimist that I am I DID try before I built.

And these will be replacing the Ikea Jerker desk I used to keep my huge A&H analog desk on till it died.

So - anyone in Cambridgeshire want a Jerker?

(grin)

well, at home I took a tape measure and checked my rackgear. i took it to Ikea and measured the rast in the showroom. fine-there was more than enough space. So I bought two of them.

back home, the first one I put together was a little smaller. without rails you can stack up rackstuff in it. just fine for my soundtracs power supply and harddrives.

the second one is just too small. any rack stuff won't fit in there at all. They just vary...

Now I just made a new one out of 18mm MDF in the right size and it is even sturdier.
