| Gear addict | 2 Chameleon 7622s or save up for SSL Alpha 4 channel?
I'd like to fill up the extra 4 line inputs on my 002 with some good pres, so i can have 6 good preamps including my UA 2-610, and have 8 aux inputs with my M-Audio Octane. I can get 2 CL 7622s for about $1600 or get the SSL Alpha VHD for $1865. I know they will have different colors to them but I'm looking for something very clean, beefy, and aggressive. I've always considered the 'neve' sound to be those things, but I would think that the VHD thing would be similar and maybe more useful. Anyone have any ideas? BTW i currently do rock and metal type stuff but will be moving closer to Nashville soon and will probably be doing more country/pop/contemporary christian, so i need something versatile. |

Ive never been too big of a fan of ssl pre's but i just got a 7622 the other day and im very very pleased with my choice so far. ssl pres are nice and clean, but they dont sound like anything special really, just transparent i guess. a lot of my teachers from musicians institute used to bring in their own pres to bypass the ones in our SSL board, so i dont think it was just my ears being untrained. If you're looking at spending that much money, my bet would be on looking at an API 3124+, ive seen them used for $1500, i know thats my next gear goal after a good pair of 414's and a 421. Theres my 2 cents.

7622's sound great. The SSL's aren't bad but it's just a different sound. See if you can get them on loan and put them side by side.

I saw an API sell for $1700 on eBay. I think the SSL VHD is an amazing value, I saw one for $1200 used, if I had the money then it would be sitting in my rack now.

If I were in your shoes, I think I'd invest into a good two channel, even though you have the 2-610, and then two other different pres. Just for some different flavors. But that's me.

Yeah, different flavors is always good. I might just invest in a 4-space lunchbox and get some A-designs stuff and maybe some API pres. I'm not sure.
