rme fireface 800 or 400?

has anyone used either the RME fireface 400 or 800?

Curious if the hardware is the same, drivers are the same?...just wonder if you think it would be really worth the 500-600$ extra to splurge for the RME 800

thanks

Drivers/software is the same, hardware is slightly different. The FF400 uses the same chip for both ADC/DAC while the 800 uses separate chips. Sound-wise they're the same though. Unless you plan on daisy chaining the units together to get more inputs (and therefore need the extra bandwidth of FW800) go for the FW400. Either way is a winner though.

FF800 has specs that VASTLY outshine those of the FF400. They did say that the FF400 preamps were slightly improved over the FF800. I can't imagine I'd want an FF400, and I'd never use any of their preamps anyway.

FF800.

If you need mic pre's, go with either. However, you might serve yourself better by going MultiFace II and a higher-end mic pre.

That's my experience.
