| It's a good, basic VCA-type compressor and gate, but it's not a world-beater. I use it on toms with good results. Don't pay more than $100 for it. |

| I think they're a great buy for the money (~$100). I have two and use them for light compression while tracking drums. |

| I have a 166XL that I use all the time for live stuff.. and is quite serviceable for light compression duties while tracking guitars, snares, OHs It sounds way better than a 3630, and the OverEasy feature is nice. | is it a 166, 166A or 166XL they are all different but they are all designed to be workhorse live units. good for what they are designed for but they wernt designed for studio use. |

| You'll find the original 166 in several world-class facilities. Off the top of my head, Emerald in Nashville (before they went bankrupt), Real World in the UK, and the old Hit Factory in NY all had 166's. They're fine for studio use as long as you don't ask them to sound like 165's or 160's. |
