Question opinions on Behringer Truth 2031A

I can get a very good deal on a pair of second hand of Behringer Truth 2031A monitors. I would be curious to get some opinions from actual users...

(for mixing purposes)

thanks

Hi,
I have a pair of truth 2031a monitors and they are OK for the money.
I think that having a acoustically treated room is more important though.
My room is not ideal, it's small and although I have done some treatment I wouldn't bother upgrading my monitors until I had a better room.
So, if you have a decent mixing space which is treated I would go for something better.
If, like me, the room is less than ideal the truths will give you monitoring that's good enough. Spend time using reference tracks to set them up properly i.e. so you like the sound of the reference tracks. Then you can aim for similar sounding mixes of your own.
I put one of my mixes up on this site for criticism last summer and the reactions were generally that it was OK and ready for mastering.

My flat-mate has had a pair for around 3 years, and I think they sound good (just listening in a domestic situation with various styles of music)

The mid-range was clear and detailed. They didn't sound harsh when pushing SPLs.

There was also no cabinet rattle or bass port "chuff" - 2 criticisms I've read about these speakers

PS - From reading online reviews, it seems you have to attenuate the treble and bass with the dip switches at the back to get them closer to "flat"

You can get a set brand new for a little over $300 and a good rule of thumb I like to use for used gear is half retail, possibly 60% retail if it's pretty new and is in "tits" condition. If you stay within those guidelines then you can't complain about the 2031a for the money you're spending.

Think first though about this: What are your goals? If you're looking to buy monitors that you will never want to replace these may not be the ones. Probably 824's could be had used for about double what you'll pay for the 2031's used and those seem to be good enough that you'd be unlikely to feel a need to replace them for a long long time. But if you're looking for something with which to gain experience, perhaps as a step above headphones and/or computer speakers, and you figure the day will come when you upgrade down the road (when you get your space and other gear to the level you want), they are a great choice in that range in my opinion. That's what I'm using mine for and I'm happy with that arrangement.

Charlie
