Yikes... over in the high-end zone they've gotten distracted from talking about mics that cost $15k+ and are ripping each other new ones.dfegad
Meanwhile, I recently spent some time playing with an MXL V67g that came as a freebie with my new ART MPA Gold. It made me happy.
Really.
It sounds amazingly good. And, did I mention it was a freebie?
Let's hear it for the joy of making and recording music.

I was playing my $50 3/4 size classical guitar in the sunshine the other day and thinking, how nice to make satisfying music on a $50 instrument... not have to worry about the sun on it, not have guilt feelings about treating it poorly -- or being outclassed by my instrument.
I hear enough poorly recorded stuff done on tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment to take modest pleasure in the modest success [not necessarily the economic kind, mind you ] that I have when I put my mind to it with my quite modest gear.

...vs the 'ungeneering' stuff.
Indeed! |

Very cool! Have you had a chance to play around with the ART yet? I've got a Pro Channel that I'm swapping the pre tube in and was curious as to the MPA.
I've also got a V67G. Not bad. In fact, not bad at all. Would've been better if it was free but I still like it. I've got one guy that comes over quite a bit and it sounds great on his vox.
Anyway, congrats on da gear and Merry Christmas.

Keldog,
Yeah, I've played around with the Art a bit... I posted on the tube swap results in the "Is this Rubbish" thread. I'd definately recommend trading out your stock tube.

OH MAN GUYS, LEMME TELL YOU!!!
The V67g is a lovely sounding mic. I still have mine, and its amazing. Not just for the money, it just has a killer top end on it for some things, .......
I like stuff that sounds good. Expensive OR cheap. There is a bountiful amount of both, on each end, trust me.........

I love my V67g as well. I've had several other mics ranging from 300 to 1000 dollars and the V67g makes me as happy as any of those ever did. I recently was forced to use it on snare because of a shortage of mics on a huge drum kit and it's now my go to snare mic. I absolutely LOVE what it does to a snare drum, kicks the crap out of a 57.

Just came out of the dark studio. I sat there and picked on Stella for a while...old wood, new strings, no price tag.....and no dissenting opinions.

... like Hobo's singing around a burning barrel.
- Ha ha ha, look at that guy, what's he carrying?
It's not polite to point and laugh at other people Jimmy and Tabitha. That's called a ART MPA... It's sort of like Daddy's 1073's, but not really. Sometimes when people make mistakes in life, they have to deal with the consequences. One way is by buying, or even stealing cheap equipment to make music.
You see that dirty sack he's holding? It's called a "gig bag." It's what people that don't have jobs or houses use instead of racks.
- "He smells funny."
I know, make sure your doors are locked and your windows are rolled up tight, kids.
- How come that man is holding out a cup and saying "spare change"?
That's a jazz musician, DON'T STARE! He's going to tell you that the "vibe" is the most important thing in the studio. Imagine if found your mom's engagement ring at some filthy flea market and tried to tell her that it had a Tiffany's vibe-
- She'd kick you out in the street
Yes... yes she would, pumpkin. Golly! There's a starbucks with a drive through, who wants lattes? Me! ME ME ME ME!
-"Can I take your order please?"
Watch this: "whadda you know Jimmy, another musician! What instrument do you play, barista?
-"How'd you know that I play, Brah? I'm a guitarist."
Of course you are! Do you like the Presonus Eureka?
-"Sure do, bro, they're the INDUSTRY STANDARD. Did you know that I used to work at Guitar center..."
Right you are, buddy. How about three tall vanilla lattes.
Wait, make that three GRANDE vanilla lattes, we're from the "High End."
... (shakes head) what the heck was that all about? I guess "slumming it" here in the Low End is stirring up my creative side. Kind of has that bohemian vibe-thing going for it. You know, simple pleasures... no running water, toilets.

I've just come from checking out the "home studio" thread over at So Much Gear... what a shock. I'm glad to hear of someone getting a lot out a little, rather than the other way around. Rock on.

OK, you got me... I did myself eye the V67 when it first came out and after much debate went with an early SE electronics cardioid tube mic. It took me a couple tries to get one that sounded good (really spotty quality control back then), but I'd never part with that $300 tube mic. As for the ART gear, I've never used the Pro MPA or VLA, but I did buy the "nightbass" tube preamp & multi effects unit in 1991. At the time it was the most expensive piece of gear that I ever bought ($750) and beyond being my live bass preamp & recording DI, it was my main outboard delay, reverb, overdrive and EQ on every recording I made on my 4 track and later my ADAT for the next 7 years.
Most of these home recordings are much closer to my heart than any of the "pristine" crap I've been cranking out with every piece of high end gear at my disposal, but dammit, this is Gearslutz and I'm not going to let some enthusiastic DIYers remind me of the long dead passion for music that once drove me into this business!
Now, who wants to compare really expensive electronics equipment? |
