I'm in the market for a CD Recorder/Player. I want to get something under 800$ I was thinking of the Tascam CD-RW900SL. Opinions PLEASE.

I love my HHB Burn-It plus, and its big brother the 850 before it.

You're a real person, right, not just a fabricated identity with a hidden agenda, right?

Yeah, I've got a Fostex that appears to be the exact same thing as an HHB only a different color. Love it.

I demoed the HHB in the store and it's a great unit, as are all HHB products (I have an old Fatman 2 tube comp/DI that will NEVER leave my studio). I haven't tried the Tascam or Fostex. Now I will probably get flamed pretty hard for this, but if you're gonna spend that much money, why not buy a Masterlink? Unless of course you don't have a use for the extra capabilities of the ML (I don't know what your setup is). In that case, HHB all the way. It beats the hell out of my friend's Sony that cost about the same money.

OK... similar issues came up in another thread. I have to admit -- I'm stumped as to the advantages of a standalone CD recorder... if anyone wants to go sidebar with an explanation, I'd be fascinated to hear their thoughts.

I use the Tacam DVRA1000.

1. I keep total control of Protools during the bounce

2. I go AES out of Apogee into the Tascam and can hence use Apogee's UV22HR, which I happen to like, but that is of course personal

3. It functions as a CD player

4. I can mount CD's on my desktop without having to use the, in my experience rather buggy, CD-DVD player/writer in the Mac (only thing I have had to replace in several Macs over the years).

I'm just a creature of habit, and what I've always done is (1) record a concert, (2) mix it down in Digital Performer, and (3) burn a CD master on the trusty HHB of the moment, and then duplicate copies (dozens, hundreds, whatever the market asks for.)

And my monitoring is all through the CD burner, I mean, that's what it really sounds like, yes? No?

JP,

It depends on the tone of the blank media. Some are much better than others. See, some peoples think its the outboard units laser capabilities...

Laser?

That sounds scary... pretty hi-tech, too. I think I'll just stick with my CD burner, thanks.
