Not loving the passive Tannoy Reveal 6

Hi --

After deciding that my old Tannoy 6.5's were shot, I decided to stick with passives (since I have a nice Hafler amp) and get some Reveal 6's -- the latest version. Well, my first impression -- and granted, I haven't fully set up my new project studio yet, so acoustics aren't what they should be -- is that they're a little disappointing -- surprisingly bass heavy. Has anybody else had this impression? And can anybody recommend a decent alternative -- something under $500 a pair -- keeping in mind that I probably prefer a more balanced sounding monitor?
