| There's not really a middle ground per se; there's low end, low-mid end, and high end. If you check out gear prices you'll notice a huge jump from $500 to $1200 when looking at outboard gear. So it sort of goes Behringer/Samson/ART to Grace Design/Summit/Chameleon Labs to Avalon/API/SSL. I'm sure it has something to do with a sililar price jump in the cost of components made to higher tolerances, as well as a higher retail markup. I think it's always best to go ahead and go high end if you can, in the long run you'll save money as you'll be upgrading fewer times.

| i didnt think pricey gear made a difference, but when my chain was complete, it makes all the difference in the world, no bullshyt. Do some research and buy what your budget will allow, dont make the mistake of getting into debt for the compressor or pre that you cant afford.

| It's all what you can afford and want to experience, it really is that simple. Just like buying a car, you either want the sleekest one you can afford or you're cool with something well priced that simply gets you from point A to point B. Don't be ashamed of "low end" equipment. If your songs are as good as the Beatles (they may be) your BOSS recorder would produce sounds far within acceptable limits in a good room and good players, with skill behind the board. My theory is this: if you can and want to afford it, have 2 KILLER CHANNELS to work with. Great mics, great cables, great preamps, great conversion. Even recording an entire band, once drums are done most of the process is one or two channels at a time. This adds up tremendously at the end of a project. War
