| Gear interested | I do the same as yankee with a pair of KM84s except I usually put a U87 infront of the soundhole a few feet back for ambience.

1st choice - SM81 2nd choice - MXL 603 I ended up with a pair of SM81s. A pair of those in X/Y at the 12th to 16th fret range and I am one happy camper. I really got some good sounds with the MXL603; if I had ended up with a pair of those, I would be pretty happy. They are a little brighter than the SM81s, but they are a great bargain and they sound great. Last night I went back and listened to some recordings I did of my acoustic and an SM57 and you know, if I were stuck on a desert island with an Mbox and an SM57, I could get by okay. Not the same as the condensers, but it has a cool sound all its own. bilco |

I've been happy with my AT4040. Has done a great job with most instruments I've thrown at it.

I love my Oktavamod 012 pair, and my KSM 141 pair. I have had good results with a 4033, but dont like it on voice much. Heck I can get good sounds with a C-1000, and EVERYBODY hates that mic! I have an Oktava 011 that sounds real good too, and the V-67 is my favorite LDC for acoustic, that I have used anyway. I borrowed a 603 a few weeks back, and it sounds good also, but may have a bit much too highs for some guitars, or placements. I guess almost anything will work good, in a good room........ |

You already have a large diaphram mic. You might wanna shell that 200 on a simple but effective AKG C1000S. It's a small diaphram condenser, that will help pick up the nuances in your picking etc... it's also cardiod or hypercardiod. Hypercardoid will have that ability to zone in on your tone at a particular point from a particular direction. And you can use your main mic (your Nova - which I have never tried) to track the ambience. There are a million articles and threads which will tell you to place the mics (even the product website)... but of course my main guide for mics is don't place it where you won't place your ear.... And the c1000 can stay in your collection. You might probably never sell it cause it can be used in the future for overhead cymbals etc...

| Get A Pair.
If you use a good pair of directional mics you can adjust where you aim them on your guitar to get the sound you are looking for. I am working with an old pair Sony ECM Condenser mics. Aim them in an X with the heads right next to each other at the 14th fret and the deep part of the body. Thats a good starting point then play with them. You can aim them anywhere just not right in the sound hole as most of what comes out of your sound hole is air....
