Another mic for Christmas???

My fellow slutz.........
The company I work for has generously handed me a $400.00 gift certificate on e-bay (they know me well) as a Christmas bonus. I am thinking of adding just one more mic to my locker, and that's it.
Presently in my small home studio I have the following........

Oktava MK-319 (2) May consider modifying later, but I'm liking them now.
Rode NT1-A
Hiel PR30
Cascade Fat Head
EV 468
ATM650
Shure beta 56
Audix D6
Sennheisers e825, e835, e845

I've been thinking about upgrading a notch in a LDC and considering........

Shure KSM44
Blue Bluebird
CAD Trion 8000
ADK A51 TC or A48 Vintage Valve

I am open for any and all suggestions. It will be used mainly for male vocals, and acoustic instruments. Thanks ahead of time for any advice. I have learned a lot lurking in this forum.

Edit: oops, didn't see the male vocals/ac. instruments part.

How about Sterling Audio ST-77

Hi Blue Bongo,

I like using the Bluebird on baritone/bass male voice, but on high voiced tenors, it's a little too bright for my taste. In fact, I just used it on a classically trained baritone today,

Thanks Juan,
I may not be a true baritone, but my voice leans a bit to the deep end.
I really like the Blue mics, and have been thinking about adding the Baby Bottle or Bluebird for a while. From reading this forum, it's seems the Bluebird may be more of my liking.

Blue Bongo,

If you PM me, I will send you an A/B recording of the baritone I recorded. I recorded with both the Bluebird and my mod'ed MK319, even though I figured the Bluebird would be better. The Bluebird is much more detailed and its slightly brighter sound is clearly better on his voice. I'm a newbie, so I'm still a little gunshy about posting my recordings on the site for anyone to listen. Still trying to figure out this recording thing. :)

You really cant go wrong with the KSM44.

Very utilitarian with it's (fairly) neutral sound and multi-patterns.

Good quality too.

Good luck,
David

I love my new bluebird on my tenor vocals...

it outshines my cad m9, MXL v69, Heil PR40, and SE 2200....

smooth crisp and the low and high ends are very nice ~!!

Vote for Trion 8000. Great vocal mic, only $225 on Ebay. Way outshone my TLM103, and KSM32. Great presence, nice in the mix AND multi pattern.

bongo.
you can buy a slew of mics for 400 buks.
used n new.
pawn shops/used ads ...old shure n ev dynamics sometimes around 40 buks.
how about the shack pzm modded...some people love em modded.
apex have lotsof inexpensive mics.
some people like the cad gxl series for under 100 buks.
ive been looking at the ev cardinal for 90 buks on discount.
AT are great mics....but there are lots of alternatives.

how about for fun building your own mic for 20 buks ?
lots of info on google.
then there are the naiant.com mics that are intrigueing.

just some alternative ideas.
god bless.

I suggest an SM7b (I know I'm new here, but that's the mic I'd get).

Used and loved by lots of Gurus, though a dynamic mic. in fact you could probably swing an SM57 and an SM7b in one swoop.

In the meantime you might get better miliage out of your NT1-A by using that Dave Pansado trick of using Waves C1 (or cheaper alternative) as a dynamic equalizer on the sibilant frequencies of the Rode. I have an NT2-a and K2 and that trick alone (and variants) caused me to start having fun recording again after some time with no fun :D

Dave tricks page: Dave Pensado's Plug-In Secrets

I'm new here so excuse me everyone - I've been lurking for months and really appreciate all the help and coolness here.

Hey Joey,
Thanks for the suggestion. Right now I'm using a Korg D-16 as my recorder and havn't ventured into the computer recording world as yet.
Confuses the Hell out me!

Forgot to add to Joey,
I have the Heil PR-30 as my dynamic in the "Broadcast Genre". I'm not sure how it holds up to a SM7, RE20 etc. but it's kick'in ass so far.
