I correct you.

It was an Shure SM7. The owner and previous owner of the VERY SM7 mic that was used on Thriller are registered users on this VERY forum and by using search, you can even find a thread where pictures have been posted from the thriller session and the ***** ordeal is discussed in minute detail.

I was aware that the majority of the vocals were recorded using a sm7, I thought a 58 was used sparingly but I'm obviously not the authority on that

I read in an interview (Sound on Sound maybe?) with Paul Kolderie or Sean Slade about Radiohead's "The Bends" album that they used a sm58 for close micing guitar amps and a U87 further back. And they said they pretty much always use this set up...

I have read that Jeff Lynne has used a SM57 on the snare....

The lead vocal on "Billie Jean" was tracked on a SM57 (check the Shure website!).

Am super partial to 57's as they are a 9+ on my vocals compared to my 10's (Telefunken USA 251/C1/U47) that I've compared on quality (Avalon 737 or better)mic pre's.

Shoot, even through a Mackie (gasp) they sound darn good for me IMHO...

Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded the Green River album using SM56 mics, which were basically SM57s on a swivel, almost exclusively...the vocal for the song "Green River" also used that mic.

I won't mention Sufjan Stevens...

But let's retitle this thread "Preaching to the Choir".

lets do the math.

sm57 = sm58

sm57 > I-5

now lets watch everyone disagree with me. People like different mics, thats why records will always sound different.

IBTLD. thread ended.
