compressor settings

How do you guys use your compressors? I'm new to compressors so i'm confused on what threshold, ratio, attack, release and all that stuff means. So what do you guys put your settings on? I'm working with vocals here.

i am sorry to tell you that there is no simple answer here. You simply have to do a lot of trial and error and learn the hard way. Read as much as you can and experiment. Use less compression when you are tracking because once you record it, the damage is done. You can experiment in the mixing stage. Especially since you arent sure about it, you might not want to track with any.

I recommend this book for you:'Modern Recording Techniques'. Search it on amazon, im sure there is plenty you could learn there about compression and lots of other things.

good luck!
