| Yet another treatment placement question. OK, so i think i finally have enough material to get the room sounding half way decent, so i figured i'd go ahead and post a diagram and some pictures and try to get some feed back. Flickr: Photos from dervis.altad what i have: 18 2'X4'X2" pieces of covered rock wool 16 2'X4'X4" pieces of acoustical cotton From what i understand, the best placement for the speakers is shooting down the room the long way, but the south half of the room doubles as a home theater/hang space and is only used for spill over when i'm recording a whole band. so i'm more or less stuck with my mix desk where it's at. the curtain's just a long thin piece of muslin that's just there to cover up the unsightly piles of crap that are behind it (it doesn't seem to effect the sound of the room). i'm planning on just hanging the rock wool on the wall w/ velcro since building frames is a PITA and is somewhat counter productive. i was thinking i'd use most of the 4" cotton as traps, placed across each corner floor to ceiling, and the rest as gobos. as you can see in the pictures, everything is currently just kind of randomly scattered around, except for the 3 pieces of 2" hung on the north wall as a first reflection absorber. i figure about three more pieces on the east wall directly across from the monitors as another reflection absorber and one as a cloud right above them. should i also hang a cloud above my main tracking area? other than that, i'm totally at a loss as to where i should put this stuff. so i put it forth to you all, oh experts from the intertubes, to please guide me with your sage wisdom and advice. many thanks in advance. |

| Lives for gear | What I would do is this: Definitely put the cotton in the corners, wall/wall and wall/ceiling. As many as you can. Definitely put a cloud over the mix position, depending on what's there now. You want to create a Reflection-Free Zone at the mix position, so that the first reflections from the speakers are absorbed (or aimed to a different part of the room). So the walls and the ceiling should be treated around the mix position. From there, experiment with what you have left. Make a few gobos, attach 2 of the rockwool panels to a 4'x4' sheet of plywood and build a stand for it. Instant gobo. useful when tracking. You can also have the gobos double as your RFZ treatment during mixdown, ie, move them to useful places. I'd also put a cloud over where you plan to record acoustic instruments, such as drums. Use some panels to make sure this space sounds good. Again, these can be gobos. There are many great arguments for using portable gobos in a small studio. It allows the engineer to alter the room acoustics depending on what he needs. The only drawback is that you have to move them around.

| I'd look at putting your mix desk on the other wall. You can keep the couches where they are and still fire down the long dimmension of the room. That ceiling is too low for a cloud, just put the cotton at the reflection point directly on the ceiling. -tINY |

| "That ceiling is too low for a cloud, just put the cotton at the reflection point directly on the ceiling." ha, yeah, that's what i meant by "cloud", pretty much don't have any choice but to put it right up against the ceiling.... |
