| Digi-002 inputs 5- 8 What do digi 002 users think about recording line-level type stuff through inputs 5-8 as opposed to going through the 'contoversial' pres on 1- 4. For instance: I do alot of Tape conversion, and i've noticed I get the same sound if I go Cassette tape into 5 + 6 @-10, that I get if I go through inputs 1 + 2 (in that case I have to crank the pres to almost 12 o'clock to get the same level as inputs 5+6 @-10). Also: Drum machines, such as an MPC, ASR X etc... I did side by side comparisons with audio recorded from an MPC into input 1 + 2 with cranked pres, vs. the same audio (same level) into inputs 5 + 6 at -10. No audible difference that I could tell through some Event ASP-8s. I know -10 is consumer or whatever, but what are GS user's thoughts- has anyone done tests and found the same? Different ? |

Sounds like your cassette deck has an output that operates at -10 (on phonos?). In which case use it as you have been. Consumer and pro is just a reference level. One isn't inherently better than the other (although balanced connections are often used with +4 gear, which is usually preferable), both are provided so you can interface directly with the gear you have.

| there is no need to go through the pres, all they do is distort and add noise. use 5-8 and you will be fine |

| Keep in mind 5-6 and 7-8 are different sonically. I remember reading somewhere that one pair is noisier than the other,

| i think 1 pair is a little noiser due to the alt input on RCA but the difference is so minuscule that you dont notice it |

| The truth I've only had my Digi for 4 years before I figured that out, it always pays to do your own research- fun too! So anybody with and MPC, whatever and a DIGI002, OO3 can bypass the pre and just use your volume knob on the MP to turn down the signal while going in 5-8 at -10, since drum machines are not really 'instrument' level, and most of them are not 'pro' as in 'balanced out'- |

The 003 appears to have dedicated DI inputs, and the 002 it would seem that the line inputs on channels 1-4 fulfill this purpose (the digi site isn't totally clear how this works - maybe it's just a fixed impedance, maybe the impedance is different depending on if it's a balanced or unbalanced input?) It would be interesting to see the difference between a signal recorded, bypassing the preamps in the manner described above, but not DI'd correctly, and a signal using the pres, but using the DI so the impedances are matched. Both have their positives and negatives, but I wonder which would SOUND better?
