Bass traps and distance from corners...

I have searched high and low, but this question eudes me. Can anyone help?

Simply, we know spacing traps from a corner a bit helps increase low end absorbtion. What if I need to place my rear traps around 16-20 inches (maybe even a bit further!)from the corners? Will absorbtion still be improved or at this distance does it start to effect it negatively?

Any info would be appreciated as I cant finish the rejig of the room till I know about this one for sure. Thanking you....

There comes a point where the absorber will stop being broadband and start being just the opposite. It will start filtering at the frequency who's quarter wavelength equates to the distance to the boundaries. This goes to prove that it's not the air behind the panel that helps, it's the additional distance from the front of the panel to the hard boundary behind.

While it's not necessary to have perfect contact between the edges of a panel and the walls in a corner, keeping them relatively close is usually best. You already have the space behind you inherent in the corner (and a variable space at that which is a good thing).
