Talking Audio Technica ATM450 review

I was looking for some drum overhead mics and at the recommendation of many users on GS I decided to give them a shot. I picked them up off ebay new for $350 for the pair. Sweetewater would have set me back closer to $450. My first impression was that the build quality is very good on these mics and the I actually really like the mic mount. It felt like I was holding a solid mic in contrast to the okatava mc012 which I always thought felt flimsy. The mount is very high quality and I would pick up them up for any pencil mic that could fit properly. I had planned to run my atm450's through a pair of API 512c's for the most part but for some reason it took me almost a month to get the API's. I ended up having to run them thru **gasp** a Behringer T1953 Tube Ultragain. I know everyone hates Behringer but i had know other choice. I was actually completely satisfied with the results on my overheads. I go the exact sound that I was looking for as i didn't need to ad any eq on my overheads which completely surprised me. The cymbals sounded nice and rich with not a hint of shrilly harshness. Everything was "just right." I also love the fact that they are side address. This made it very easy to setup perfect xy patterns although it did feel a little strange because i'm so used to pointing the mic like a flashlight at whatever point I'm aiming for. I felt like I was miking the wall!!!! Overall I think these are an amazing buy and I will post another review when I run them through the API. I also got to try them on a small choir and once again I got that prefectly flat and rich sound. They sound like they should cost at least double what i paid. I don't miss my old km184's anymore.

This is good to hear! I've got two coming my way from "front End Audio" thanks to Warheads enthusiasm. Great price also I will say.
They'll be running through an API 3124+ and quite possibly the Universal Audio 4110 if it ever arrives.
