| Gear Head | Akai MPD 24 VS Korg padKontrol first of: sorry bout my poor english, I'm from serbia and only real english I've learnt was from cartoonnetwork, hip hop, and Rambo (this is a joke, ofcourse) So, I'm planning this time not to break a bank and purchase one of these two midi pad controllers.. so, I have a few questions: 1. I'm making hip hop/bigbeat/breakbeat/dnb/ethno/rock/electro/jazz music. which of these two controllers would you recommend? The only thing I like with the padkontrol, iz the touchpad for flam/roll drum playing.. 2. are the trigger pads on mpd and pk the same size? 3. does anybody have some experience with this two? which one is better for what (pretty same as the first question) 4. how do they work with programs such as Battery 3, BFD, Guru, stylus RMX and toontrack plugs? I was planning onto buying MPC 3000, but.. :) I've just broke the bank with the virus TI.. thanks Peace

| I have a Korg PadKontrol and I must say I really like it. The X/Y pad is cool but I rarely use it. I do mainly indie rock and singer/songwriter type stuff. You might find more use for it in your genre of music. My only complaint is that sometimes when I really nail one of the pads (usually when playing a kick or snare part) it'll sometimes trigger a neighboring pad. I've never dug very deep with all the features this thing has...but for programming parts in reason, and bfd....it's been a breeze. Satisfied customer here. |

thanks.. but I really don't like the glitch.. when triggering more than one pads at the same time.. :) I'm really lookin into using that x/y pad for roll and flam functions.. but, as I've overheard, u can program it for filter sweeping, etc.. true or false? :)

| true, you can can set it to control any parameters you want. it also have two assignable knobs, which arent endless but that's more of a personal preference. i happen to like the pads on the PK better than the akai and i didnt have a need for all the knobs and sliders that the MPD24. i'd say they're both of excellent quality and you cant go wrong either way, it just happens to be what your personal preferences are and what needs you need to satisfy. that said, +1 on the PadKontrol. also, as for triggering adjacent pads, a simple change of the sensitivity settings should clear that right up. |

| Well I tried them both and went with the MPD24. I liked the pads better on the MPD24 mostly because I was used to Akai samplers. Also the MPD24 is just built really well. It doesn't feel cheap and is an amazing deal at the 200$. The Korg felt a bit plastic-icky to me. The MPD24 has plenty of plastic also but the base is made of metal and is heavy so the whole thing feels solid while playing on a table. The X-Y pad was of no interest to me because all those types of controllers never really give the expression I want; as in it is too random and repetitive for me. I program everything so pads, sliders, knobs, are what I want. So thus far nothing but personal reasons for choosing the MPD24. Here was the selling point for me and it was all about my work flow: the transport controls on the MPD24. If I am starting a song from scratch I like to load up a lot of samples I have recorded of myself playing synths et cetera. I load them into a software sampler with the pads mapped to the MPD24. I have 2 turntables, keyboards and the MPD24 running into a USB hub, strung with a 20 foot USB cable to my computer. I like making beats and rhythms nowhere near the computer. The transport controls are a freaking blessing. Really sweet for making beats in a program like Reason without needing to go to the computer much. I set up the samples and song at the computer, spend 30-45 minutes on this and than I just play for hours. However, I must say that now that I have seen the Froteir Designs Tranzport, I probably won't need the MPD24's transport controls in the near future, but keep in mind that the MPD24 works nicely as a transport controller. I like the Transport because it will allow me to have more control of Pro Tools LE remotely and the MPD24 is way lacking for this. They are simple transport controls on the MPD24 but they are VERY useful it is all you got. ![]() |
