From my experience: Stay away from anything that has to do with processing audio and has the name Behringer on it.
They make some really good usb/midi-controllers (bcf/bcr2000) and their tuner is okay (something like the dtr2000). They also have a rack light and power distributor that works like a charm. the passive patchboxes work as they should as far as i know. Other than that....... Behringer

I am not the most knowledgeable about older Behringer gear, but the red lettering may indicate that is is pre-China manufacturing.

Many people agree that the older Behringer gear is at least usable, if not excellent.

If you listen to how something sounds on it, you will get your answer pretty quick. If you can recognize the original signal in the middle of all the hissing you might just have found a piece of behringer equipment that works. There are some of them, but i've never heard anything good from them that actually has to do with the audio part. And i've owned quite a few behringer thingies.

LOL ... Never experienced that in the behringer things I've used.

Admittedly I've only used a composer compressor from mid 90s, one of those stereo enhancers, a "tube" composer and a "tube" dual mic pre from early 2000s.

No phasiness, no heinous hiss (except on extreme comp/limit) settings no distortion, (although the mic pre has low-ish headroom --- easy to clip on drums) low noise floor, no muddiness, no loss of body

Just a clear, full-bodied, useable sound.

I get the feeling I've been lucky though

I'm still waiting for someone to take some behringer stuff to an L.A shootout
against some highend stuff....

Has a shootout happened???

Are we afraid....????

because it's all to easy to look at a price tag and make a judgment.

My daughter is 5 and she thinks that if you are a few days older than someone
you are smarter or better drawing...

really ...if you look at price and know how to count it's childish to judge on price.

Everybody will easily piss on Behringer because most people don't know any better...

C'mon put a pre-amp of their's in an anonymous shootout and reveal the brands after everyone has voted.

I think that's the only fair way...otherwise it's child's play...

I have three behringer items.

Truth Monitors
A cheap mixer to control volume of my monitors
and the headphone amp.

The monitors are ok. Not phenominal but they work. Id like to upgrade to some nicer ones. but these will work for the time being.

The mixer is a piece. But im only using it to control my volume. protools hd interfaces have no way to control mix volume. Only with the master fader. But i need to have it at 0

The headphone amp is pretty decent.

Other then those three items i stay far away from behringer. There stuff is known to blow up. Ive had a truth monitor fry, and a mixer catch fire.

Ive tried the behringer Tube preamp. Its the most horrible sounding thing i think ive ever heard. Not saying all high priced stuff is great but most of the time you do get what you pay for.

When they came out with the ADA8000 i was like, oh sh!t they made something I might need.... I picked it up soon after it came out for 8 more inputs for remote recording gigs (clubs, etc.) Was better off without those 8 extra inputs. Pre's sounded like TRASH, striking difference when they sit in a live recording against better pre's.

I couldn't even pawn it off on ebay....

I would agree the AD8000 isn't much in te preamp department. then again, if you bothered to use a decent pre in front of it you would find the conversion is adequate. Not special.....but then again what is for 8 channels of ANYTHING at that price. (In my case, like 100.00)

I have had many folks in my place that put the Composer...at least the pre China one, up with a DBX 160X, maybe ahead for some applications. Serious guys.

I've used the headphone amps, decent prosumer....again...its a 100 dollar box....traet it as such its fine.

People slag Berhinger today the way they used to slag Peavey. Yeah...its not API, iits not Neve, but used in a reasonable context it can work adequately, if you give a chance before you trash it.

In a former live i owned a Behringer 16 ch mixer, made in Germany. It was pretty decent i must admit, even after it took a 2 meter dive on solid concrete!

+1

I had the "Ultra Gain Pro". It shared 1 toob between 2 channels...

At the time, my Digi 001 and Mackie VLZ pres murdered the behr....

Sure, the ultra gain poo would bring up a microphone level, but it did it in such a horrendous manner. Ultra Poo

I sold it for $25.

That's bullshit, I put mine up in an ad on another site and had about 20 people make an offer within a few days. The pre's aren't great but we did a shootout with all my cheap pres on dirty guitars and vocals and the Behringer actually sounded better on the dirty guitars than my Eureka which then got sold quickly. I will admit though, the Behri only gets used for scratch tracks and as a talk back channel.

The early german made (black and red) stuff is seriously solid and good stuff. Worth peanuts, so grab it if it's as cheap as it should be.
