learning drumagog took 90% of my skills.. so there are only 10% left. I will invest them in searching a good drummer, a good room and good gear witch doesn't need drumagog

depending on the style the overall drumsound is made out of the roommics and not closemics. or do you ever listen to a snaredrum 2" away?

I would have thought "200Hz is your friend" if you want to
lose definition between your kick and your snare, rarely in a 57 close
miking scenario is the lower end lacking when I do this.

And boosting 8MHz is more likey to create a shortwave broadcasting radio
station.

However more constructively I have found that inserting reverbs especially
convolution ones seems to reduce the attack so these are truly best left as
sends (just laziness on my behalf really).

This is so true. Its crazy how much more a snare sounds like a snare when you monitor with the close mic and the overhead and then even add in the room mic. The close mic is just for the power, its the other mics that shape the sound. Another thing that I've learned (and I got a pretty good teacher) is that if the snare doesn't sound great in the room, its not going to sound great on tape. I've fooled myself at times into thinking that even though the snare didn't sound all that nice, that I'd be able to record it and eq it to sound better. Never works.
