Kel HM-1 vs SM57 on toms

I haven't had the opportunity to record a drum kit with the kel's yet. How do they compare with a 57 on toms?

I've only used it on floor tom, but it sounds good. Would be even better if it had a built-in pad.

For toms, you should check out the new Kel,HM-2d. It's got what their calling a small supercardioid polar pattern that should work great for toms. The sample is just a voice over but it sounds like it might have that in your face type of focus. Seems like it might work for just outside of the kick, too. Definitely something worth checking out.

Probably true. But, I already have a few HM-1's. Not sure the budget will reach for 5 new mics

Guess I didn't really do much for your question, did I. Sorry about that.

I just started using LDC's for toms lately, was using 57's, I have to say that it really opened them up. Much fuller representation. I'm using CAD M177's and Studio Project B-1's. So far, I really like it.

I guess you can use 57's on toms, but every studio I've played in as a drummer here in the Bay area uses condensers. While I've never tried using the kels on toms (I like my cheap little akg clip on sdc's), I would certainly throw them up before the 57s. Other than in a drum recording book I bought years ago, I've never seen 57's being used for anything on a kit other than the snare of course. If you have a pair of kels, I'd be interested to hear your experience with them as tom mics and as overheads.
