If the C42 are little more than you want to spend (although they are in your price range) I think the SM81s are a great all around SDC. I like them best on acoustic the most, but also use them as drum overheads. Unfortunately, I've never had the pleasure of recording a fiddle. I found my pair for $350 on craigslist.

AKG 451

or..

Neumann KM184

either of these might be out of your price range new, but can be had as a pair used pretty easy..

The "Beyerdynamic MC930 Cardioid Condenser Microphone Stereo Set" is right at this price point - what I'd get if I had a grand to spend on another SDC pair (which I don't, yet).

I'm downstream from there with an Oktava MK-012 set (six cap) and my first cheap Chinese mic venture: an MXL 603S kit with omni caps on the way - them's my two SDC pairs for now!

EV RE200

Have 'em, like 'em. Very clean. Perfect on acoustic sources i.e. guitar, violin, cello, conga, triangle, even hi-hats. Not too expensive either.

EV sells quite a few of these, yet there are very few available used. That says they are keepers. A great endorsement.

I personally think the Oktava MK-012 pair with all capsule (omni, hypercardioid and cardioid) is your best bet. They kill on acoustic guitar, do very well on overheads, and aren't overly bright so fiddle work is not an issue with them. You'd have a pair of mics with every pattern possibility at hand.

My $.02

A pair of SM81 mics would be good. They work well for all you mentioned. I regularly use them for drum overheads.

Better would be AKG C451 (what I regularly use for fiddle and guitar) and the KM184.

1K for a pair of SDCs HMM
love those c42s, but soo many people want those km184s the 451s and the 81s alwas seam to find them selves being used!

I own all but the Josephsons and really crave a pair! Now I would consider all the above to modern stand by and worth the investmet plus push come to shove I know I can get a decent sound out of them and anybody with any experience is going to know the 81s 184s and 451s I can't really say that about any of the newer chines mics!

Ever check out RODE? I have the NT4 and love it. Reasonable pricing as well. You can get the NT5s for a little more versatility as well. Just something to consider.
