How to hook up

Hi guys,

I currently own a Digi 002 rack and will soon be upgrading it in terms of a/d converters and inputs (mic preamps).

I was saving money for a very high end 2 channel preamp (Neve or Api) but reconsidered the idea of starting "small" again. Instead, I would now
buy a decent 8 input preamp (possibly Mackie Onyx 800r - suggestions are welcome) and later on invest in the more expensive stuff.

My question is: How would I hook up a Onyx 800r, a high end pre (neve) and a Lynx Aurora 8 channel A/D converter (remember I´m using Digi 002) ? The onyx already have a built in a/d converter so how would I by-pass that ?

Hmmm... Here you go, I'll list the equipment in order from microphone to computer and include appropriate cabling in parentheses. I don't want to insult your intelligence by oversimplifying anything but I think this will be a good reference.

microphone
(xlr cable)
onyx or neve
(1/4" TRS balanced cable out from pre to DB25 Aurora in) *a patchbay would be nice in between for compressors and other outboard FX*
Lynx Aurora *you need the adat expansion card*
(optical cable)
Digi 002
(firewire)
Computer

This is the setup for recording, you can come back out the Digi via optical into the Aurora and out with another DB25 to TRS to a board if you so desire to do a mixdown. If anyone thinks of a more efficient setup, post away. Hope this helps!

you can t the adat out on the onyx directly to the adat in on your 002 using an optical cable, not needing an external converter. (it may be lower quality, but it is still pretty good)

the onyx is good value for money (as I've said a few times on this forum) there is no reason why you couldn't make a professional sounding recording with this set up

I have a very similar situation. I run a few good preamps, (A Designs Reddi DI, A Designs MP2A, and Chameleon 7602), into my "Presonus Firepod" 8 channel Pre/Converter. I run everything in the same order that you have explained except I use (xlr cables) out of the pre's and into the Firepod instead of 1/4" TRS balanced. Does it matter? Is there an advantage, disadvantage, or problem with XLR as opposed to 1/4"?

This is my setup:

Mic
(XLR microphone cable)

A Designs Reddi DI, A Designs MP2A, and Chameleon 7602
(XLR microphone cable)

------>

Firepod Pre's/Converter
(firewire)

I believe there is no difference in XLR vs. TRS as long as you are sending "balanced" signals. sujuba may only have XLR outs on the Neve pre or other choice, which would require another balanced cable to get to the A/D converter. I suggested the patchbay for ease of not having to mess with the DB25 on the Aurora.
