Low end drum mics

Hi guys,

I'm new to the board, and basicly also to recording.. My band is investing in some basic recording gear. The problem is that we have a quite small budget right now, so we want to buy some basic stuff and upgrade later.

We already bought a Presonus Firepod. It's a great unit, especially for the new price! I have about 150 euro to spend on drum mics. I'm already getting a SM57 for the guitars, so i can use that on the snare too. We have a SM48 too, so i can use that on toms.

I'm looking at a nice pair of overheads and a mic for the bassdrum. I've been looking at the t.bone mics, they are priced nicely and i've heard good stuff about them. I've been looking at a matched pair of SC100 mics. It's a matched pair for 90 euro's..

I've been looking at the t.bone BD300 as a bassdrum mic, it's 55 euro.

This looks like a nice set of mics to start with, upgrading is possible later on. What do you guys suggest i get? Any suggestions? I know the budget is tight, but 150 euro is really the maximum (maybe i can stretch is to 200 euro, but that would be the real maximum).

I'm looking forward to your suggestions!

Thnx,
Robbert (from Amsterdam)

You'll get enough tom bleed from the overheads so the sm48 might work on snare bottom. That tbone set might be good for overheads. Otherwise I can highly recommend Naiant microphones. That tbone bass mic isnt too good from what I heard.

Ehh...

I strongly suggest you to go with Samson over T.Bone or Behringer. I've got full set of Samson's drum mics - 2 C02, 2 Q Snares, 4 Q Toms and Q Kick and have gotten amazing results. I just did a recording for my band, though it's shitty quality in there and we're singing in Finnish check it out: www.myspace.com/diabandi

Yeah, i know the toms will probaly be picked up fine by the overheads. it's just an option we have so i mentioned it. An extra mic can be usefull to bring some power to the sound tho.. I just have to try and see what sounds best..

The t.bone overheads look fine, but i would like to hear from some people who have heard of recorded with these mics (or the more expensive ones). What did you hear about the bass mic?

Thnx for your input, I will look into the Naiant mics. I heard good stuff about them too on an Dutch forum.

That it doesnt have too much low end pickup and mainly works in the mid sections.

I have msh-1 omnis as overheads and cardioids on my toms. Sounds surpisingly good for a 20 dollar mic
