secret pieces of gear under 200.00

i recently did alot of upgrading in my studio, i was wondering if there are any secret pieces of gear for under like 200.00 that you like to use.
mic pres, compressor etc?

i have been able to get great vocals and basslines out of a little presonus half mic pre (which i call my secret). I was wondering if there are any others

Frontier Design Tranzport. Although a little over $200, its been a godsend in my setup.

I've used a couple pieces before that I saw around the $200 price range used-the Presonus MP20 preamp (the blue one, I think thats the name)-very neutral and clean. Second is an APhex compellor-picked one up for $250 and I use it instead of the distressor in applications like acoustic guitar and some vocals.

any of the Fostex "printed ribbon mics".

FMR Audio RNC seems like a great comp for 200$. I haven't used it myself yet, but i did hear some great things about it. I'm going to check it out soon, it seems like a very good deal!

SLightly over $200, but the Apex 460 tube mic may be one of the best deals of the century on mics.

Ibanez SDR 1000 and the SDR 1000+. Regularly on Ebay for around $100.00-$150.00 or so. This is a true stereo in/out verb unit and well worth researching.

I picked up two (albiet very sick) eventide 910's for $50. I think they generally sell for under 200.

+100 on the DIY basstraps. And the 421s for that matter.

Yes, I do.

But I can't tell you what it is ...

... because it's a secret.

I can tell you, but then I'd have to ... you don't want to know.

Stuff I can attest to:
+1 on the Apex 460/Nady TCM 1050/1150-- also a great platform for modding. Also, Karma K-6 Ribbon ($199), Audix I-5, Epiphone Valve Jr. Combo, MoreMe Deluxe Headphones, Rane MS-1B's, +1 on the FMR RNC

You've already said to much.

But seriously, MXL makes some pretty decent mics for cheap. Some are garbage, but a few a great. The V67 is a good one.

lol....re secrets.
i use a secret transistor in a little mic pre i build for 10 buks.
its fooled more than a few who think the tracks were done with an expensive mixer.
loads of stuff under 200 buks.
some studios use shack minimus speakers to mix on...really.
(shack stuff is normally not that great.then along comes a little gem.)

i think the apex mics are a good deal.
as well as the software in my sig.....both together cost under 100 buks,
and cover everything one would need to produce songs,...includeing large suites of fx.
i also feel yorkville monitors n rane mic pre's are a good deal.

I can't vouch for the mic or the dealer but musicansbuy.com has the Apex 460 for $188 (plus shipping I reckon)

i had the BCF2000 for a week, and couldn't get the thing to work at all with PT. it worked fine with abelton live, but i bought it for PT, and it was a pain trying to get it to work. but on top of all of that, even if i would have gotten it to work, i wasn't impressed with it enough to keep it. the motors were too slow, and overall it just felt really junky and ready to fall apart.

I had one of the Beringer BCR2000 knob banks, intending to use it with some synths. Neat idea, but I returned it and got a midi controller keyboard.

I use a BCF2000 w/Cubase LE. It works for me (but I can see how it may not work for everyone). It took a few days to get working, but I love it for the $. (and plan on buying a 2nd used one to get 16 faders)
