The picture with your dog is priceless. You should put it on the "Pets in the studio" thread.

Is that a flat tv screen or a gigantic monitor? I guess is great working with it.

thanks, its taken a long time, lots of re-arranging, and trips to home depot and ikea to get everything comfortable. The way I had things originally set up, there was a lot of clutter and some of my gear wasnt easily accessible. Now everything is right where I need and it really makes a difference. it makes me want to spend more time in there

I think ikea had recording in mind when they designed it. It's kinda great.

Glad to see you treated the room, but you should get some traps across the corners.

Yes you do, but going through page after page of setups you are still are 100% better set up then most of the other rooms and have some treatment to show.

Well, I didn't get my studio desk from my old neighbor's, so everything is on the ground. And a friend is using the drum kit. And you can't see where most of the Auralex stuff went (a friend gave me a Roominator kit). So, these pictures aren't so great, but oh well.

You should see the walls, there is sticky tack everywhere when it was covered in rock posters. I think I'm going to buy some old maps and tack them on the ceiling, it will look nice.

Hi everybody!

There certainly are some nice budget rooms in here, and a lot of creativity! Here's a panorama view (made of two pictures) i took earlier today showing the "studio" end of my living room.

yep, i followed this guys instructions:

Acoustic Panel

But we used denser fiberglass. I wanted to get owens corning but due to budget and time issues had to go with the home depot stuff. I didnt take any measurements, but the room sounds noticeably better then the 2" and 4" foam that was up previously. Regarding corner trapping, you can't see it from the pics, but there is a futon in one corner of the room and stack of "tupperware" boxes filled with books in the other. Eventually hoping to build some dedicated corner traps as well as suspend some panels from the ceiling.

Cable,
If you just plan on flat mounting panels like you have on the wall then they would work fine for mids and high frequencies, but for bass traps you need to have open backs (no wood covering the back side) to make it work. The panel would need to straddle the corner or mounted off the wall 4". FYI even mounting the panel off the wall 4" helps but to really bass trap you would want to straddle corners. See our lab report here to see panels on recommended wall mounting vs. corner mounting. Link here GIK Acoustics

Would hate to see you build something that really is not going to work right for you.

Glenn,

Thank you for the advice! Its hard to see from those pictures, but the panels are actually spaced about 2" off the wall using nylon spacers i bought from a hardware store. The wood covering the backs of the panels is perforated, but in light of your comments im thinking about unmounting them, removing the wood all together and getting larger spacers. The one thing im worried about though is having the fiberglass uncovered, I dont want to be inhaling fiberglass particles all day :)

As long as you are not beating on the panel no fibers will get into the air. You could also cover the back with spray glue and fabric if you are worried about it. Just a note (kind of again) your best place for trapping is in the corners. So as much as it will help (I would do it but just want to point this out) you really are not "BASS TRAPPING " a lot below 125hz until you start straddling corners.

NICE bass trapping!!!!!!!!! BUT as much as I love teles they really do not make very good first reflection absorbers. Move the tele and get some panels on right and left walls instead. In fact you can just send me the tele.

I would not use polys on the side reflections. In fact unless your room is REALLY big polys are not really the best way to go. I would go with absorption for the side walls and for the back wall (if you sit 6' or less from the back wall). If you are more then 6' from it I would look at QRDs or Skylines for the back wall. You can also place diffusion on the side walls behind where you sit, but once again polys would not be my first pick.
