I really hate this statement .. I really do not mean any offense but I couldn't just let it be when I read this. I want to jab myself in the eye with an ice pick after reading this.

This is like saying that building a house with fisherprice tools makes you better at building stuff.
It's a whole lot more fun and easier to mix and record when you can actually hear what stuff really sounds like without all that noise and degradation of quality throw in there.

and before you call me a gear snob or the like .. yeah I have worked on my share of behringer stuff .. and there's a reason I don't ever touch the stuff again as long as I live. Why torture yourself trying to get a halfway decent mix out of that garbage when you could put a little more investment into it and actually enjoy making and mixing your music.

Maybe it's just me I dont know. Maybe you're a glutton for self punishment. I mean use what you want .. I'm not telling you how to do your thing, but for what it's worth, Why not just buy a boom box and record to that .. it'll sound about the same.

Because great music has been made on a hell of a lot less. Frankly, I am very happy with the results I get. Rather than invest money into my mixes, I invest more time, and I have a lot more fun mixing on this gear than I did on a Toft or an SSL console.

As far as the original statement which caused you to blind yourself (though I am wondering how you're able to read this or who you got to read it for you) does it not stand to reason that if you can pull a good mix out of Behringer, you can pull a great mix out of anything?

I just wanna say that I really enjoyed this - lot of cool places here! We all want high ceilings and lots of space - damn I'm stucked in a pretty small place - probably big in some aspects but for me small cos I have to fit in a kit and a console and lots of old keyboards and stuff - I have more stuff that I love to add to the space but it' impossible - like a upright piano, more synths and another drum kit etc... If I get rich I will build a studio in our barn...

You guys rock!!!

How do you like the Onyx?

Oh and just for curiousity, how did you like the Eurorack? My guess is that you didn't!

If you're interested in a Behringer mixer, I'd go with the Xenyx. I have an SL3242FX-Pro (Their big console) and was ordering a second one, but when it arrived at my place off eBay, the damn thing's right channel was dead. (It was shipped with some very shitty packaging, so I think that's what caused it.) I didn't feel like waiting on a new one to arrive, and decided to head over to Sam Ash and pony up some extra cash so I wouldn't have to wait on shipping. The only SL3242FX they had was a floor unit, so I passed on that one and figured I'd try the Xenyx 2442FX instead. It doesn't have the subwoofer output or the master graphic EQ like the Euroracks do, but I have to admit that I'm still very much impressed. Those 'British' EQ's that Behringer hypes on their spec sheets and website really are substantially better. It has better control over the lows and the mid frequency is a narrower band, so it acts more like a parametric EQ and does a better job for picking out frequencies to boost or cut (does ****ing miracles on guitar.) Plus, the Xenyxes are of a much better build quality. (Looks like Behringer finally stopped using hot glue in place of solder inside!) The pre's are much better on the Xenyx also. On the SL3242FX, I would normally bypass the pre's, but with the Xenyx, even though they're not absolutely spectacular, they're still very usable. I'm selling my SL3242FX to buy two more Xenyxes.

That pretty much tells me all I need to know right there. If anyone in their right mind that has actually mixed on an ssl or a toft and prefers a behringer over that, than something's totally off here. but I digress.

and if you ask me, mixing is mixing, whether you're on great gear or crappy (behringer) gear, yeah you should be able to get a decent mix regardless. But there is only so much you can do with crappy gear. Frankly, I would rather not have to spend waay more time than necessary to get stuff to sound like it should.

but as I said .. I digress.

I LOVE the Onyx. It's given my Jomox XBase09 a punch like you wouldn't believe. The Perkins EQ is also quite nice for teasing out the right sounds and the preamps are quiet (no hum or fizz until you REALLY crank the gain). Also, word has it that the firewire option is actually a fairly nice AD converter for the price, so I'm thinking about adding that later.

As far as the Eurorack went, well, it did it's job. My only problems were than the level meters were DOA, the preamps were pretty noisy and two channels went dead after about a year. It only cost me about $150, so I don't feel too bad about it.

What a great thread. So inspirational. I'm up for a huge movement of all my gear to another room in the house, which will be done by next weekend. I'll post some pictures of my "studio" then!

Cheers, keep it up.

Hey thanks. There's 6 mics on the drums. On that track I ran the drum mix out through a focusrite chanel strip and funked them up with quite a lot of compression/distortion, then blended that back into the mix

Finally, a thread about real people with normal lives and problems! LOL

I personally find these studio pics much more interesting than the ones with the SSL's and Jupiter 8's. Very inspiring to see what people can achieve with a more limited budget! - Particularly when your (my) own budget is very limited.

I will contribute with pics of my humble low end studio soon.

Thanks.

Neither. I got sick of this 'if you don't spend a fortune on your gear, you can't make good music' mindset, so I traded all of my gear for Behringer equivalents (except guitars and synths of course) as a way to prove the elitists wrong.
