Hey. I posted this in the main forum, but I'm also posting it here in case this place is more appropriate. I'm doing some demos at home, working with a Groove Tubes GT66, Audix i5, MBox, and Pro Tools LE 7.3.1. Just tracking vocal and a J-45, "live" takes---no overdubs or track-by-track. Anyway, with the equipment I have, can anyone help me to replicate the "lo-fi" sound of some '50s and early '60s recordings? Sorry, but I'm new to recording and my tech vocabulary is pretty limited. The best I can say to describe it is this: warm, fuzzy, tiny bit of that country/rockabilly slap-back delay you'd hear on an early Cash record or---even better---on Willie Nelson's "Crazy: The Demo Sessions." I must sound like an idiot, but if you get what I'm saying, I'd really appreciate some advice on how to get a little more character out of this system. Thanks! |

A great room is above all most important. Have everyone playing live. Some tape delay/plugs. minimal effects, use live room sound and leakage instead. I love the sound of early country and blues records, especially the tape delay/slapback sound. |
