Upgrading Home Project Studio...Digi 002, Digi 002R, M-Audio....or something else?

Hey all!

I've been looking around for quite some time and have enjoyed gleaning so much from all of you, but finally thought I'd drop in and ask a question myself.

Anyway... I currently own an mbox with Pro Tools LE 6.9 and typically record in Logic Pro 7, although I have been trying to develop my chops in Pro Tools recently.
Unfortunately, PT 6 does not work on my new MacBook Pro, so I am stuck without Pro Tools and thinking I may want to purchase a better interface with Pro Tools 7 alongside it for several reasons...

1. so I can run Pro Tools 7.1+ and learn it better (especially since I am beginning an internship this summer in a recording studio)
2. I record primarily in multi-track and the complaint I get most (from people I am recording) is the delay caused by the mbox's USB-caused latency (which can be avoided by turning of software monitoring, but I would like to be able to use software monitoring so as to be able to use software plug-ins in the performer's cans)
3. I am beginning to find the 2-channel recording to be a limiting factor (i.e., it would be nice to be able to record a drum kit or multiple singers, one with a guitar, etc.) -- I may also be taking on an internship in the fall where I could use a better system for recording an entire band on-site as part of an education program
4. A MIDI interface would be very helpful (my current controller is a USB controller w/ the interface built in, so I would like to be able to connect my own keyboard through an interface to the computer)
5. The 002 (console) can be used as a standalone mixer, which could be useful in live applications and provide more opportunities for paid gigs

I realize that a 002 might not be the best interface at this point, but my thought is that I probably want to make a larger jump than from an mbox to a Motu 828 -- especially since a 002 can be had for around $500-600 right now I am wondering if it would be a good investment. My current mic cabinet is small (a Rode NT-3, a CAD E-200, an SM-57, and an SM-58). I am considering adding an AT 4050 to that as well and could probably use another 57 or two (I'm on the budget of, well, a college student...so it's slow going!).
I am thinking the 002 would be a nice upgrade since they are in good (cheap) supply right now with the 003's having come out.
I'd love to hear any inexpensive suggestions you might have. I am taking my time getting equipment, finding the best bargains I can find.
So far, my uses have been:

NT-3 (med-large diaphragm condenser -- 3/4") -- bright, nice on vocals, especially female; also nice for adding brightness to piano

E-200 (LDC, back electret) -- darker tone, seems to do nicely on piano and on male vocals; sometimes I try it on other instruments; it's been acting weird lately, though; I am thinking the electret's charge may be weakening. It has a rechargeable battery so that may simply need to be replaced

57 & 58 should be self-explanatory!

Let me know if you have any thoughts.... I'd love to hear them.
My main purpose in having gear at this point is to learn to record, mix, edit and so forth by helping my peers (I am in a school of music), usually for a nominal fee (enough to cover my time and it helps with the gear, but no profit really). Thanks!

Mate,
a long time has passed since your post, but in my opinion the 002R would be a good choice for you.

-If you want to be able to use protools
-and to have a nice number of inputs

he choices can only be down to 002, 003 or the M-audio stuff.

If you don't need Word clock (only in 003) then its a good time to by a 002 since they are much affordable nowadays.

my best
